Chaptire Huit: Accept it
Sabrina's reality wasn't nearly as dire as the others, but she carried the weight of it on her shoulders which ultimately drained her. She lugged it around, allowing herself to become a prisoner to it. Sabrina tried to be her Aunt's saving grace, get anchor, but she had one of her own tethered around her fragile being; one that bounded her to her unkept bed.
Her 'gift' of sight wasn't guaranteed. Sometimes she would dream of nothing and other times she would only feel things. And when she did enter the wilderness, it would only be for a short amount of time. There was also the issue of occupying someone that could barely move an inch on her own without being in agony. So really it was a curse disguised as a blessing.
She needed something else. Something solid.
Hence why she finally pushed herself out of bed and headed to Wiskayok High School, hoping that it would jog her intellect. Sabrina didn't care much about the why, her concern was with the how. How can she use her faux blessing to find them? How can she help them? How can she save them?
Sabrina walked past a withering garden and into the school, blending in with the other students by wearing a pep rally shirt she found in the garage. She headed towards her Uncle's office, frowning when she heard the boys basketball team's sneakers squeaking echoing through the gym.
Life goes on, huh?
Once she reached the room and made sure that she was alone, Sabrina pulled a crooked bobby pin out from her pocket and began to pick the lock. Her clammy hands wobbled clumsily from uncertainty. She had only seen this done in movies and doubted that luck would grant her a pass. But just as foot steps could be heard down the corridor, the door pushed open and she stumbled in. Sabrina gently closed it, thankful that the universe had mercy on her.
With the door closed behind her, Sabrina glanced around. This wasn't be her first time in the office as she had visited the school few times before. But this was her first time paying heed to it. Her sister found more interest in their Uncle's occupation while Sabrina was more fascinated about what time they were leaving.
She walked behind the desk, her thumb flicking through some stacks of paper as she past them.
The room smelled like beating sun rays with a hint of citrus. Sabrina dusted the cover of a few folders and then skimmed through them, searching for nothing in particular. She just wanted something to give her an idea, something that could give her a path to a solution.
As she turned to lean against the desk, her hand knocked the phone over and she was barely able to catch it in time. The collision caused the voice messaging system to start and as she fumbled to put the device back in place, it played the log.
"Mr. Martinez, I would like to have those permission slips on my desk by Monday..."
"Hi, this is Katie, I wanted to talk to you about Travis' attendance in.."
"Hey this is Ben, I'll be running late to practice today.."
"Why won't this fucking thing turn off?" Sabrina muttered to herself, two seconds away from pulling the plug out when another message started.
