Lewis had woken up drenched in sweat. He had had a nightmare and it hadn't happened to him in years, since he was a kid. He was a little ashamed, as if someone could read his mind, for being vulnerable, for having weaknesses. In the end, as soon as he got out of bed he had already forgotten what he had dreamed. He went downstairs and had breakfast, he had the diet printed out and "glued" to the fridge. In reality the paper was held up by two old magnets that his friends had given him from a trip.
He had no intention of respecting it that day and, with the excuse of needing energy, he went a little wild.
Almost two weeks had passed since the last GP and he would soon have to go to Imola for the new one. He had returned to England for those two weeks to say goodbye to friends and family.
His last thought before going to sleep had been Melissa and he realized it while he was making coffee, she always drank it at any time of day or night.
He sighed when he realized he saw her in the honey jar, which was the color of her eyes. Lewis was obsessed with her eyes and lips. How many emotions he had seen dripping from those big doe eyes and how much love that soft mouth had placed on his body only he knew. He would have paid to be able to stroke her hair again to make her fall asleep and to see her torturing it with the iron and curlers for having moved it, to smell the smell, which he defined as "unbearable", of hairspray in the bathroom.
A minute's respite, please. Get out of my head.
He didn't want to never see her again. He just didn't want to run. He didn't want to get a house in Italy and go live with her immediately but Lewis realized that perhaps Melissa didn't want to force him to do anything, she was rightly thinking about his future.
He called his dearest friend Sebastian, Vettel, to ask his opinion, he knew how women worked better than him, he's been married for long, and he would certainly enlighten him.
-Louie! Tell me everything champion!-
-Listen, Seb...
-What happens?-
-I'm having trouble with a girl-
-Aia, how can I help you?-
-I need some advice. I met her because she was doing an internship and let's say that at the beginning we didn't get along so well-
-Mh mh- he heard from the other end of the phone once in a while.
-Then we started getting along instead-
Sebastian chuckled –I understand, I understand-
-But now we don't talk to each other anymore-
-What happened?-
-Long story short, we were "on vacation" together for a week. I raced but in any case I spent the rest of the time with her except that when I took her back to the airport she asked me to go and live in Italy with her-
-After knowing each other for a week?-
-We met at the beginning of the season, the holiday was a couple of weeks ago now. I realized that she had talked about it for work, she doesn't want to leave her country for reasons of stability and security. Then she told me that I could ruin her career if I found her the job because if we break up- he swallowed for a second to catch his breath -with a snap of my fingers I can ruin everything for her-
-I don't blame her too much but I understand that she felt under pressure, hasn't she called you since then? Didn't she make herself heard again?-
-No, very Italian and very proud- he closed his eyes and saw her, it made him smile and he hadn't even noticed.
-What about you? If you want to hear from her, call her, it's of little use to stay here and complain with me- he said it with a wise tone -women are complicated but in the end you just need to know how to read between the lines. I think that one there likes you a lot-
-Her name is Melissa-
-Melissa. I think Melissa likes you a lot, but she rightly doesn't want to take risks but wants to be with you. Maybe talk to her, tell her that you will stay as close to her as possible and if things go well you will get a house in Italy and she will adapt to where in Italy-
-You're not entirely wrong, I could have thought of it before-
-Besides, I'm the smart one-
Lewis laughed –Thanks, Seb-
-Let me know how things go-
-Sure, thank you again!-
Lewis looked for Melissa's number in the gallery and looked at her name for a couple of moments before working up the courage to call her.
-Hi-
-Hey-
-I'll be in Imola in a couple of days, if you want I can let you in-
-I already bought the ticket myself-
Lewis didn't expect it.
-Can you enter the paddock with what you have?-
-No-
-Then I'll take care of that- he scratched his neck. Damn you, you make me act like a kid. I'm 38 and she's just 25, I feel stupid. –So...- he took a break and drummed his fingers on the table.
-I miss you, Lewis-
-I miss you too-
-But I have to talk to you, at least I think...-
-Well I'm here now- he said in a calm tone when in reality he had felt the Christmas dinner of '98 come back to him.
-I'll see you in a couple of days anyway, I think it's more appropriate to talk about it directly in person-
-You are the personification of impatience and now you tell me you want to wait?- he chuckled, more to hide the tension. However, he heard Melissa giggle quietly and then he too calmed down.
-Nothing too important but I still think I should let you know... what happened during our "brake"-
-Okay, see you soon-
-See you later-
What the fuck have you done?
