Chapter 26

Jack cursed internally when Black pulled away a second later, releasing him.

"Cheese?" Black asked with a bright smile.

"What?" Jack asked completely confused. Why weren't they kissing anymore? Just so that Black would believe Jack was still under a spell, of course, and definitely not because Jack liked it; the only reason he was so inappropriately turned on was because he had the lewd body of a 17-year-old, nothing else. Also because he hadn't had an orgasm in a seriously long time, so really, he would be turned on by anything and it had nothing to do with Black whatsoever.

"Didn't you say you wanted to make cheese?" Black asked a bit confused, clearly oblivious to Jack's problem while he opened the fridge to point at a large plastic bucket containing fresh goat's milk.

"Cheese. Yes, of course." Jack nodded. He had completely forgotten about that. What was wrong with Black? How could he be thinking about cheese while they had just been making out like that?!

"So, this Ecuadorian cheese you wanted to make, I think I know which one you mean. It's a quick and simple recipe. As far as cheeses go, it's one of the easiest, so perfect to start out," Black continued, unfazed by the make-out session, as he removed the bucket of milk from the refrigerator, placing it on the counter.
"First, we need a pot."

Black's frame suddenly grew much taller as the demon reached up the top of a shelf, above which there was a giant pot which he brought down and placed on the oven. Jack had seen him changing sizes during battles a few times, but he had always believed that Black's size was only due to how much his opponent feared him, not that the demon was able to change his height randomly just to grab a pot.

"That's so practical," Jack noted stunned. "What other super awesome abilities do you have that I don't know about?"

Black gave him a strange, tender smile as he began pouring the milk into the pot. "At the moment? None. My powers are very weak in this bright sunshine." He gestured with his head towards the large window that let in bright sunlight.

Jack stared at him in disbelief. Black had just admitted to having no more powers than Jack did in this heat. Why would he let Jack in on such a secret if they were enemies? The information was invaluable for defeating him.
They were still enemies, weren't they...?
Jack had no idea what to think. A part of him wanted to believe that it was all just a scheme to turn him against the other Guardians, but another part wasn't so sure. Another part wanted to believe something else...
He wanted to believe that the reason Black had used the potion was because, just like Jack, he was confused about the 3 days they had spent together. Maybe, just like Jack, Pitch just wanted 3 more days to figure it out...
Even though Jack tried to push it on a silly mission, deep down he knew that the only reason he was playing along was because he wanted to find out the truth; he wanted to know if Pitch returned any of the feelings Jack was so desperately trying not to feel. Was Pitch Black even capable of that...? Was a creature made of pure darkness and fear able to feel anything beyond that?
Jack had to think of everything he knew about Pitch: Pitch liked goats, flowers and ice cream. He spent his days making cheese on a hot tropical island that took away his powers. Pitch was also the first Guardian.
Even though Jack had tried to convince himself that Pitch had been lying, he knew it wasn't so because it was the only thing that made sense; after all, fear existed to protect people. Pitch Black existed to protect people, even if his role had been distorted over the centuries thanks to MiM and the other Guardians. Up until just a few days ago, Jack had believed that a world without fear would be paradise, but meanwhile he believed that a world without fear would be even more chaotic than it was already. If no one feared anything anymore, not even the consequences to their actions, they would have hell on Earth.
