I was lucky I had Rio. Whenever I was in trouble, I had Rio. When I needed someone to talk to, I had Rio. When Rio needed someone to talk to, he had me. But Isa had no one before me.
Before I met her, I'd always ask Rio what she was like. He had never talked to her before I came to England, however, he knew of her. I'd ask him what she looked like- whether she looked more like our father or her mother. I'd ask what she sounded like - whether her voice made her sound nice but her face made her look mean like me, or whether she sounded mean and looked mean.
His response to that peculiar thought was that he never heard her talk. She was quiet even at events. All she'd ever say was 'Hello' but she'd say it so quietly that you'd only know she was talking from the movement of her lips. She may as well be mute - at least that's what Rio said. I could've got him to speak to her.
I could've got him to tell me sooner that I was hating a lonely girl just because she grew up with both parents. I don't know what I would've done if I had known about her sooner.
However, finding out what Rio really thought of her made me glad I found out about her myself. It was like something you'd only see on TV - the boy falling in love with his best friends little sister. The little sister who was the completely opposite to the type of girls he'd go for. Rio liked bold girls, girls who'd never keep their mouths shut, girls who loved to fight. Isa was quiet and hated the idea of being in fights. That why when I moved here, keeping Rio away from my sisiter was the last thing I thought I'd have to worry about.
However, the first time I introduced him to her was the quietest I'd seen Rio. As she put her hand out to shake his, he towered over her, holding his breath. His eyes wideneded and couldn't detach from her. It was a cold day, however, he was sweating like it was hotter than a summer's day in Spain. Then when he finally spoke, it was like he forgot how to speak english. He looked like an idiot.
Then when he finally told me he thought she was - and a quote- the most ethereal girl he ever laid his eyes on, I punched him in his ribs. That was the first time i realised how protective I was over her. Since then, she was the number one banned topic of conversation between us. Even thought I wanted to pretend he was joking about his feelings towards her, he wouldn't let me forget.
So, when I had to take Isa away from her scheming family, for once, Rio wasn't the first person I wanted to go to. His wasn't where I wanted to go, but like always, I had no other options. So, I took Isa's to Rio's house.
Luckily, his parents had gone away for the weekend so I knew that I had at least two days for Bruja to come to her senses before I could trust leaving her with Isa. I knew what I was doing was close to kidnapping, but Bruja would never report me - she hated the idea of any attention being drawn to me.
So, Rio's was our getaway space. As expected, when we arrived, he was like a puppy that hadn't seen his owner in a few days. He hung close to Isa, throwing out as many jokes in order to make her laugh. While I was glad he was making her happy, I hated the fact he was only doing it because he wanted her.
When she was sat on Rio's living room sofa clicking the TV remote to find something to watch, we were leaned over the island of their open plan kitchen. While I was fiddling with the flowers that sat in the middle of the island, Rio's attention was fixed on my sister.
"Stop" I ordered.
"She's not real" He blushed.
"Keep talking and I'll kill you".
" Hear this, Isabella...Santos".
"I told you to stop".
"Tio, wouldn't you prefer your best friend, who you trust and love to take care of your sister".
