A New Day

It was a new day. I drug my feet to my home after shifting back to human form, and went straight to bed. I hadn't slept much the night before because all the memories of my little family kept coming back. One-hundred years later and it still felt like yesterday. We lived there about seven years...

I had fallen asleep almost instantly, not even bothering with my clothes, and dropping my bag on the floor.

When I awoke most likely a good five hours later, seeing as the sun was high in the sky, someone had come in and put my bag on its hook and left a meal. From the steam coming from the tea I assumed within the last five minutes. I sat up and grabbed the tray from the side-table and threw the hot liquid down my throat, not even tasting it. I took one bite of the meat that was there and one bite of the bread, not even bothering with the butter. The homeless of the village would need that more than I.

Once done, I put the remains in my bag along with the biscuits from yesterday's meal at the cottage. I put on a fresh pair of trousers and tossed on a clean shirt before washing my face in the basin, not bothering to dry it off. By the looks of things today would be hot, why dry myself out even more?

Grabbing my bag, I made my way to the front door, nodding politely to those I passed. I met Zara by the door, apparently she too was going out. “Hello Zara.” I greeted her.

“Hello Elliot! Where are you off to?” She asked, genuinely curious.

“Oh you know...feed the homeless.” I replied, as if talking about the weather.

“Really? How often do you do this?”

“Since forever.”

“Weird.”

“What?” Why was that weird?

“Because, so have I!” she giggled as she opened her bag that was slung over her shoulder to reveal goodies from breakfast and lunch. I couldn't help but smile. I have no idea why we hid it. Father wouldn't punish us for it. It was our food and we could do with it as we pleased.

“After you m'lady.” I exaggerated as I opened the front door and gestured her though.

A New Day; 10

We both laughed at how funny we were being as we made our way to the 'bad' part of the village. It wasn't really bad at all. That's just what people called it because it was where most of the homeless and more odd people lived. We arrived there in a couple minutes and the sight that met my eyes tore my heart in two every time.

This part of the village was a little more run-down that the rest because the villagers did not have the money to buy food, let alone items for home repair. In every single ceiling there were at least five holes the size of my hand, the doors weren't even really doors anymore. In place of the wooden squares were tattered pieces of cloth that some had torn down for warmth. The villagers here were so skinny, and pale also. I never knew why father didn't just buy the things for them and have it repaired. Because, then they would all want the same. He would have said had I asked.

“Here you go.” Zara and I said to the people as we gave them each some food. They ate it greedily, their hungry bellies starving for more.

“Sorry. That's all I've got.” I said sorrowfully. My heart clenched when the little boy I was talking to teared up as his stomach growled. He clenched his abdomen in pain and I almost started crying. “I'll be right back.” I said to Zara as I jogged off to the market. I had 20 gold pieces in my pocket, and there was no one item in our market that cost even two gold coins.
