The War Outside

I heard, and felt, Alys enter the room followed by the 'guards.'

“Elliot! There you are. I searched the whole village for you. You didn't tell me you were a master!” My mother and father just looked back and forth between Alys and I.

“I didn't tell you because. I. Don't. Want. You.” I felt my heart break as hers did, and I hated the stupid feeling. The first step in the denying process had been started. Verbal denial, although I've already told her before it seems this time it impacted her. The next step was emotional denial, then once one mate found another, you were free.

“Elliot! How dare you speak to your mate like that!” my mother scolded me. I glared at her hard,

“Beatrix was my mate!” I yelled. “This...girl! Is simply that. A girl!” I got up and shoved everyone out of my way, my vision was blurred from my anger, everything going red. I stepped out of the house and pointed myself towards the forest but my anger made me shift before I got there, before I was even out of the village.

I guess that's why my name means everlasting terror, I thought as the memory of what happened flashed through my now clear head as I took to the air. I was still steaming, but I can see clearly now.

Everyone flinched away from me in fright. Even Zara and Cynric, my siblings. I was so mad and furious that I hadn't noticed the fear all over my mothers face as my father jumped in front of her to protect her, ready to shift. I had been viewed as a threat...by my own family.

Zara and Cynric had gotten defensive and the maids ran from the room and the guards moved Alys to protect her. I was awful.

Now I was flying towards, you got it, the cottage. I just got back too.

Once I reached the coast the cottage sat on I flew straight to the ocean. The sand molded to my giant form as wave after wave crashed against me. I just sat there and moped. Usually, they wait a few hours for me to cool off, but after a fit like that I suspect no one will be here for a few days.

I exhaled through my nose into the ocean water and created bubbles. When Tommy was a baby he used to love that, he thought it was the funniest thing in the world.

With an internal sigh and a heavy heart I stood up and walked to the cottage before changing. Walking straight to my bedroom and to the dresser, I pulled on a clean pair of trousers and a shirt before heading outside to the garden shed.

After grabbing my bow and a couple arrows, I trudged off towards the forest line to find some dinner since I didn't get to finish mine.

Three arrows, twenty-minutes, and three quail later I'm starting the stove, then heading outside to see if some vegetables have kept growing in the wild by themselves. To my surprise, they are.

So, after picking a few potatoes and carrots, I'm heading back into the house to start up my dinner.

As I eat at the table that night, I'm burdened by awful feelings. Pain, misery, and being alone. There is a gigantic hole in my heart that I can't seem to fill, no matter what I try.

All I can remember is my little Thomas sitting next to me; getting mashed-up potatoes in his hair...and Beatrix sitting across from us trying to be mad at me for letting him do that, but she couldn't. Tommy looked too cute and she couldn't help but laugh. He had needed a bath anyways.
