Sophia

It's been five years since she died. This is the first time I've talked about what happened. I step out of my car and walk into the flower shop to get her favorite flowers. I think back to the time she bought me my first pair of ice skates, it makes me smile. My mom taught me how to skate when I was five years old.

My mom went missing five years ago today, she was never found. I grab her favorite, pink orchids. The ride to my moms house feels slower than usual. Maybe time is slowing down, trying to catch up with me. I pull up to the property and grab the flowers out of my passenger seat.

I take the familiar path down to her grave site. I place the flowers down at the bottom of the tree. I sit and talk to her telling her about my skating but I intentionally avoid telling her how school is. I tell her how Liam is doing and about Spencer deciding to do hockey, I don't tell her about dad though.

It's been a long couple of weeks with finals, watching Liam, skating competitions, and my moms anniversary. Stepping on to the ice, I begin my routine. If I don't make it to nationals this year then my dream of going pro is over. My routine starts off with me going around the rink once and twirling into the center. The music is loud and keeps me in the zone. Everything about my chaotic life goes silent while I'm on the ice. It's been about an hour, but I still have thirty minutes until my training time is over. Suddenly the music stops right in the middle of my spin.

The spin I was performing: the catch spin, is where I'm holding my leg up behind my head. I falter, making me clatter down hard against the ice. I start to get up but realize my leg is bleeding. I stop myself and turn to see the other skaters walking into the rink. My best friend Vivian comes running over to me. She helps me up and takes me to the first aid room. I sit down and start to bandage my leg.

"How did you manage that?" Vivian chuckled as she put my skates to the side.

"I don't know. I got distracted when someone turned off my music, it's what caused me to fall." I say as I put the bandage on my leg.

"What are you talking about? When the group walked in you were already on the ground and there was no music playing." Vivian states confused.

"My music stopped abruptly, and I was alone when it did."

"Maybe there is a scratch in the disk?"

"That's never happened before. I will have to check the CD before next practice. Don't you have to practice?"

"No, I was just coming to skate with you."

"Oh okay, I have to stop by the store and get a few things before heading home."

"Okay. I'm going to head home and study for the biology quiz then."

"Alright, see you later." I say as I wave goodbye.

Once I got to the car, I pulled out my phone to check the time. It's six and I still have time to get to the store. It takes about fifteen minutes to get there. As soon as I get to the store I pull out my phone to check my shopping list.
