Lady Mary woke up first thing in the morning and immediately thought about how she could torture Lady Edith for the rest of the day. As Anna did her hair Lady Mary contemplated all the remarks she could say to ruin Lady Edith. Should she playfully tell her that she'll never get married? Should she scoff at her attempts to seduce Mathew? Should she allege that Lady Edith has three nipples to him? There were endless options to choose from.
Suddenly, Lady Grantham stormed into the room unceremoniously.
"Mama!" Lady Mary cried, "What has gotten in to you?"
"It's Mr. Bates," Lady Grantham started.
"Did he murder someone again?"
"Yes," Lady Grantham said matter of factly, "but that is not what I came to tell you."
"Then what is it Mama?!" Lady Mary cried again, impatiently.
"It seems there has been a mistake, Mathew isn't your father's heir, but Mr. Bates is."
"What?!" Anna chimed in startled, almost losing her balance.
"He is our master now," Lady Grantham said grimly, "He must now be called Master Bates."
Lady Grantham exited the room.
Anna smiled widely, "I guess I'm done doing your hair forever now, Mary"
"Don't you dare call me that dear Anna, it's too strange."
"Well I don't need to take orders from you anymore you bitch."
Lady Mary scoffed at Anna, as Anna flipped her golden hair locks at her and exited the room.
