"Ugh.... I hate the water! It keeps getting in my hair!" Nemuri complained.

She gets that they're newbies, but was it really necessary to have them doing an overseas mission?!

"Calm down, Nemuri!" Hizashi said loudly (as per usual). "Besides, this is a great opportunity! It's not everyday that we get to go out of Japan! We might as well do it while we're in our prime!"

"We're nineteen, Mic." Shouta retorted. "And stop being so loud."

Nemuri glanced off the edge of the boat, one of the older heroes approaching them.

"Alright, brats." The hero said, crossing his arms. "The villains are going to be on a boat. Apparently, they're transporting people with some rare mutation quirks. We're not certain as to why they're going by sea, as there's surely easier transportation methods, but it's not like we can complain."

Once their instructions were given, they were off.

.

Nemuri pinned down a few villains, nearly gagging at the scent of blood and chemicals on the boat. They'd already saved a few people, so she didn't really assume-

A groan of pain caught her attention.

"YOU DAMN BRAT!" A man yelled, throwing something to the ground.

Nemuri's eyes widened at the sight of a little girl no older than four, teal colored messy hair covering her head, a few same colored fish-like scales on her neck and her forearms. A chain with a collar was attached to her, the man pulling her closer.

"If you weren't my ticket out of here, I'd-"

Midnight's whip wrapped around his throat, dragging him to her feet as Somnambulist flooded from her skin, knocking him unconscious.

"That's out of the way...." She mumbled, before turning her gaze to the child.

The girl narrowed her eyes at her, hissing slightly, a cloth wrapped around her mouth tightly to keep her quiet. Midnight slowly approached her, crouching down. Fuck. She wasn't good with kids! This was Hizashi's specialty, hell, even Shouta was a better option!

"Hey, kiddo...." She said quietly, sensing the girl's fear at the moment. "That uh.... That cloth must be uncomfortable. Mind if I take it off?"

The little girl hesitated, before stepping closer. Midnight slowly took the cloth off from around her mouth, the child looking up at her.

"Are you a hero?" She asked quietly, her tiny voice squeezing the heroine's heart.

"Y- yes!" Midnight quickly responded. She put her hands on her hips, saying "I'm the R-rated hero, Midnight!... And you are?"

The young girl hesitated, before responding "I'm Mirei...." She then sniffled, saying "I don't like it here.... I'm scared.... I wanna go home...."

Midnight felt both an overwhelming anger and a piece of her heart break at those words. How dare these savages cause harm to such an innocent little girl?!

"Is it okay if I can pick you up, dear?" She asked slowly.

Mirei nodded, Midnight pulling the four year old into her arms. She stood up, starting to walk out of the place, frowning. As soon as she got outside, Mirei growled, gripping onto her tighter, narrowing her eyes at the heroes.

"Ah! Calm down, darling, these are my friends!" The heroine quickly said, looking down at her.

Mirei immediately stilled, mumbling a small "Okay...."

*A few hours later....*

"Excellent job, newbies!" One of the heroes said, grinning at them. "This went off without a hitch! No losses or injuries!"

Nemuri frowned, saying "I have a question.... I saved a little girl earlier. Do you know her condition?"

"I saw that." Shouta commented. "The kid was gripping onto you pretty tightly."

"As for your question," The hero butt in. "The girl's name is Mirei Hamamoto. She appears to have been kidnapped, obviously, and looks like she was separated from the rest of the victims."

"What'll happen to her?" Hizashi questioned.

"Well.... Since we didn't find any parents on board, we just have to let the system take her-"

A small blur darted past him, crashing into Nemuri's legs. She looked down, her eyes widened at the topic of their discussion.

"Mirei-"

"I don't wanna go!" The child sobbed.

Nemuri felt her heart breaking for the child.

A few police officers ran over, one of them saying "Ah! You caught her! Apologies, she got away from us. It won't happen a second time."

Mirei whimpered, a few small clicks leaving her, the sounds tugging Nemuri's heartstrings. Oh.... Oh, gods damn it.

"No need." Nemuri said. "I've found her parent."

"Really?! That's great! Who is it?"

"Me."

Hizashi and Shouta stared at her for a moment, before laughter left them.

"Ha- that's actually funny! I didn't take you for a jokester, Nem!" Hizashi wheezed.

Upon seeing the look on her face, the two immediately ceased their laughter, eyes widened.

"Nemuri, no." Shouta said. "A child is too much responsibility for.... Someone like you."

Nemuri narrowed her eyes at him, repeating "Someone like me?"

"Nemuri, hell no! Why would yo even consider taking her?!" Hizashi added. "Kids are a lot of work! You'd basically be giving up your style for her!"

Shouta stepped closer, reaching for Mirei, saying "Just give the kid to the-"

Mirei then proceeded to snap her tiny jaws around his wrist, and Shouta let out a screech. Nemuri covered her mouth to avoid laughing as Hizashi and Shouta tried to pry Mirei off his wrist, and it was at that moment that Nemuri just knew....

She was keeping the kid.
