WILLIAM'S FINGER hesitated as he tapped on Christian's contact. After all these days, he figured that although he didn't owe Christian an explanation, he wanted to make things clear and concise. William decided that it was time for the two men to officially part ways after eight years.
As Christian's face popped up on his phone, his eyebrows knit together in confusion at William's appearance. He looked worried. "Where have you been? You haven't been answering any of my calls?"
He had been moping.
"I've been at home, Christian."
There was a pause, and Christian stared at William intently. Although there was worry displayed on his face, William could see the clenching of his jaw.
"Are you alright?"
William placed his phone down, moving out of view of the camera. He didn't want to see Christian's face when he told him what he truly wanted. Although Christian had done him dirty, it was a difficult thing to say to someone who had been by your side for almost a decade.
William took a deep breath. "I think we should just end things here, Christian."
Christian was silent on the other end of the line. He couldn't see William's face because William had it facing the ceiling, but he recognized the tone in his voice. He knew William was upset with him.
Christian turned off his camera. "Fine. Can you tell me why?"
"Yes," William paused, "...you were right. I thought what I felt for you was love. It wasn't. I like Orion, and you like..someone else. We should have just stayed friends all those years ago."
That was when Christian Hagets cut the call.
William had expected a big reaction. He even rehearsed to himself numerous times in the shower about how he would bring up Lucas, accuse Christian of being a heartless human being, and dump him.
William just couldn't find the energy, and cut things short. Christian could have whoever he wanted. William didn't want to fight him or Lucas, and he didn't want to give Lucas the glory of being able to destroy their relationship, even if he was partially responsible. William assumed that the best way to end things with Christian was by telling the man that he had never loved him, even if William had at one point. It made him feel better, to say those words he knew would hurt Christian.

William's solitary confinement allowed him to do a lot of self-discovery. He knew that he was a very co-dependent person. He let someone choose him and then depended on them. He revolved his life around them and tried to convince himself that his life was incomplete without the other person.
William didn't want to be chosen anymore. He wanted to choose.
Christian's love for him may have been genuine, but even love can erode with time. And, the erosion of love was evident, because the two men had officially stopped fighting for each other.
William's eyes were on his desk, reading over his past research papers before a blinding light shot across the sky in a blurry.
He stumbled out of his chair, dashing towards the living room and he grabbed a light zip-up. As he kicked on his shoes and dashed out the door, the ferocious pound of his feet hitting the ground as he ran shot bullets of pain up his ankles, but shocks of love towards his heart.
He barely dodged trees and bushes as he sped towards the usual spot he star-gazed numerous times a week. The land solely had grass in this particular spot, almost as if the area was off-limits, where no flowers, trees, or bushes could grow so that something special could emerge.
Something special like a particular star that had always made his appearance in William's view from down below.
The blinding star shot across the sky once more, and William wasted no time. He cupped his hands around his mouth and yelled, "I wish I had you here with me, Orion!"
He left his phone back home, and he knew that Orion couldn't grant him another set of wishes. He wasn't even sure if it was Orion, but he believed that it was. And so, he shouted his truths out for the star to hear.
"I wish you were down here with me, so I could properly apologize!"
William stood up taller, straightening his back and taking a deep breath for his voice to overwhelm the quietness of the night.
"I wish you knew that I could love you! I choose you!"
But William's hoarse screaming did nothing. He thought about racing back home, calling his sister to try again, but instead, he slumped down onto the grass cross-legged. He willed away the tears that pricked his eyes and stared up hopelessly at the star that continued to shoot across the sky.
William took it as a sign of hope.
Orion had shown himself to him again, he was sure that it was Orion now. No other star burned as brightly or as jovially. When he shot across the sky, it was just as disorganized, and erratic as usual, almost like he couldn't contain his excitement from up above.
Maybe William had a chance after all. Maybe there was a way to make things right again.
