NOWADAYS, WILLIAM spent most of his time stargazing.
Whenever he laid down on the grass and peered up at the sky, he felt like he was connecting with Orion by feeling what the other man had felt for all those years. Observing the one you admired from afar, without being able to be with them.
William now viewed stargazing as an opportunity to be patient and give Orion time, while also showing Orion that he was serious about wanting to give a relationship a chance.
As numerous stars twinkled in the sky, William felt a hand clasp his shoulder as a body sat beside him on the ground.
He didn't need to see them to know who it was. William had held that hand for numerous years.
William sighed. "Christian."
"William." He said.
William didn't look at him. He didn't take his eyes off the night sky.
Christian nudged him on the shoulder. "Can we... talk?"
William no longer cared about what Christian wanted. For the man, Christian was a pinch in his heart that reminded him of how many conversations he and Christian had under the stars. It reminded him of how often Orion had to listen and watch someone he adored, lay with another man.
But he had been awaiting Christian's response from the other day after the man abruptly hung up, and so he nodded. Christian probably wanted to hash it out and bury the hatchet, and William wanted to use the opportunity to show Orion proof of where his heart was.
"What's going on with you? Your mom had to call me, whining about how you didn't pick up her monthly call. I don't blame you because she's an asshole, but it's unlike you."
Christian continued to stare at him, although William's eyes were fixated elsewhere.
"If this is about that Orion guy, I might just have to go and start a search party and find him for you. This isn't healthy." Christian shook his head, "I don't even think you acted this sad when I broke up with you."
As a gust of wind blew William's curls away from his face, he murmured, "I realized that I liked him a little too late."
Christian hummed knowingly.
"Yeah, everyone knows that feeling." Christian sighed. "..But, you can't let something like this hold you back forever. You have to move on with your life. ... He was just a guy."
William had no clue why Christian acted like it was easy to forget about your feelings, but he wasn't surprised. Christian seemed perfectly fine despite being broken up with the other day. William found it amusing, how heartless he was, and how fast he moved on.
William finally looked at him. "He wasn't just a guy. He was brilliant, and he's the person I want to be with."
"You'll find someone else." Christian scoffed. "What? Do you think if you're not with this specific guy, you'll die alone? You won't. So why should he matter so much?"
William tucked his face into his knees. Someone like Christian could never understand. His heart was set on Orion. That was who he chose.
And who knew when else he would take such a liking to someone ever again?
Christian inhaled. "William, I just hope that you know that you're 'brilliant' as well. Any guy would be lucky to have you. Just try to be more honest with yourself, and others."
The man's eye twitched in annoyance at Christian's last sentence.
William pursed his lips. "And Lucas is... fortunate to have you. I hope you're honest with him as well. More honest than you were with me."
Christian's eyes widened before they settled into slits as a result of his wide and toothy smile. "I don't have him yet. I don't think I told you, but he was the friend who helped me get my new manager, but I don't think he likes me. Not yet."
William was silent at that. Perhaps Christian would never admit what he had done wrong. After all, some people believe that they were perfect, and couldn't make bad decisions. Christian and Lucas would find each other in due time. He thought that they were perfect for each other.
William looked back up toward the night sky. Are the stars twinkling more than usual?
And then for a split second, a blinding light shot across the sky, right as soon as Christian opened his mouth to speak.
"Well, good luck I guess. I wish you had whoever it is that you need to be happy, William. I just know that person is not me, and honestly, I'm fine with that. I don't need you if you don't need me."
And when William saw him, the curly-headed man stumbled as he stood up, and ran towards the star like it would be the last time he could ever step foot on earth.
