Chapter 6

It was now December and Hot shot was still awaiting a heart transplant. Hot shot still hasn't given up hope on getting a heart. Hot shot had a feeling it was going to be very soon. Hot shot saw that the hospital was alive with the sights and sounds of Christmas. On December 16th a phone call came in. Dr. Pokey answered the phone. "Hello," Dr. Pokey said. "Really? There is a heart for Hot shot?" He asked and saw the offer it looked great. "Yes I will send someone out to get the heart and look at it," he said. Then she hung up the phone. "Okay we have a heart for Hot shot now it is time to get ready," he said.

The team got ready to go. One was headed to the donor hospital which was about 10 minutes away.

She came into the room where Hot shot was in the CICU. "Hello got any plans for tonight?" Dr. Pokey asked.

"We were going to watch a Christmas movie tonight," Heatwave said he was with Hot shot tonight.

"How about a heart instead?" Dr. Pokey asked.

"There is a heart for Hot shot?" Heatwave asked.

"Yes there is a heart for Hot shot," Dr. Pokey said.

"What is going on?" Hot shot asked.

"There is a heart for you," Heatwave said.

"I am going to get a new heart?" Hot shot asked.

"Yes you are getting a heart," Dr. Pokey said.

"I'm getting my new heart, I hoped it was going to happen soon," Hot shot said.

"Well we will be getting you ready for it while someone is going out to get it." Dr. Pokey said.

"Okay," Hot shot said. Hot shot was kind of excited and kind of feeling guilty about getting his new heart. But he reminded himself of what he was told the parents of the child who died gave it to him. Hot shot heard his father call his mother who was working. Quickshadow rushed over as soon as Heatwave told her. She saw Hot shot getting ready for surgery. Hot shot was nervous about the surgery but he was ready to be brave. Hot shot saw his parents who hugged and kissed him before his surgery. Hot shot waved to them as he headed into the OR. Hot shot saw all the different doctors there. Dr. Kimbrooke came over to him. "Okay Hot shot I am going to make you fall asleep with special medicine from a mask," Dr. Kimbrooke said. "How would you like the mask to smell? I got cherry, orange, vanilla and bubblegum." She said.

"Vanilla," Hot shot said.

Hot shot was soon breathing in the medicine air and was made to fall asleep. The doctors and nurses hooked him up to many wires and tubes first. Then they got the call from the team member procuring the organ. "Okay the organ looks great we can open the chest and start the bypass." A nurse said.

Hot shot's chest was opened and he was put on bypass. The team member was heading back with the heart. Then about 20 minutes later the heart had arrived. Hot shot was dreaming as the doctors removed the heart from his chest. "This heart is very messed up all scarred and patched up and weird looking, poor kid no wonder he felt so bad," one of the nurse said. "I just took off the Berlin heart." she said.

Then the new heart was stitched in place in the correct order. The heart started to fill with blood and warm up. Then it started to beat. The team watched to make sure the heart was beating well. The saw the heart was doing well after several minutes and then they closed up Hot shot's chest and started him on immunosuppressant.

Heatwave and Quickshadow were notified how things were going during the whole process. Now they saw Hot shot being taken to the CICU. He didn't look ashy grey any more he looked pink. His parents were very relieved at this.

Hot shot was settled in the CICU. Once he was settled Quickshadow and Heatwave were able to be with him. They were happy Hot shot had his new heart. But they knew while they were happy another family was grieving. They hoped to know the name of the donor and thank the family for giving Hot shot the gift of life. They hoped it was going to go well and Hot shot was going to live a happy life with his new heart. They knew Hot shot was going to need a lot of checks up and medication to take care of his new heart. But Hot shot was going to do it and so could they. Because there was nothing they couldn't handle as a family.

Hot shot was starting to wake up the next day. Hot shot was a bit unaware of what was going on or what was happening at first. Then Hot shot remembered that he had gone into surgery to get his new heart. He saw he was covered with tubes and wires. Hot shot was a bit scared of that and he was wondering where his parents were.

"It's okay Hot shot, don't be scared," Quickshadow said. "I'm here," she told him.

"It's alright son," Heatwave said. "You did great during surgery and now you have a new heart," he said. "You are going to be fine now son," he assured him.

Hot shot really couldn't talk right now due to having a tube in his mouth. It was helping him breathe. Hot shot was wonder who the donor was. But he could wonder about that later. Dr. Jal came into check on Hot shot. He wanted to make sure he was doing alright. He was glad Hot shot was doing well.

Hot shot was feeling very tired, sore and sick. He was wondering if that was normal. Soon Hot shot started to fall asleep. He was very tired at the moment.

"We will let Hot shot sleep," Dr. Jal said. "The more he sleeps after surgery the better," he said.

"I am so relieved the surgery went well," Heatwave said.

"I am so relieved to see it too," Quickshadow said. "I called my parents to let them know that the surgery happened and was a success," she said.

"I did the same thing with my parents too," Heatwave said. "Now we just have to hope his body takes well to the new heart and see if we can get into contact with the donor family later," he said.

"Yes," Quickshadow said.

Hot shot now had new heart. All that was left to do was recover.
