"Alright bitches, line up," Caroline shouted, clapping her hands together. After a long day of classes, I had received a text demanding that I be at the sorority house promptly at 8 pm. After the mixer on Saturday night, there had been radio silence from the sorority until that text had been sent out, so I was curious as to what they could want. When I got to the house, all of the pledges were standing in the kitchen, gathered around a door.
We looked at each other with mild fear, but lined up at the top of the steps. "This is Ashley, and she's here to teach you how to be a Gamma Lambda Tau."
A tall, impossibly thin girl with long, straight dark hair stepped forward. Her features were strikingly light under the dark makeup she wore, and the contrast of her light green eyes with her incredibly dark hair made her look almost supernatural. "Follow me," she announced, no emotion in her voice. She opened the door behind her, revealing a dark staircase leading to the basement. I glanced at Allison nervously, but she shot me a quick smile and nodded at me. I took a deep breath, and started down the stairs.
The basement was eerily cold and quiet. There was no light except for one overhead hanging lightbulb that looked as if it were about to burn out. Caroline kept us in formation, leading us towards the back wall where a washing machine and a dryer were sitting.
"Okay, now strip. To your panties."
We all gasped in horror, and I let out a bark of disbelief, which unfortunately Caroline heard. "Is there a problem, pledge?" She snarled, stalking towards me. I shook my head, eyes wide. Caroline towered over me, looking me up and down. "I didn't think so. I don't care what kind of ugly ass granny panties you sluts have on. Take. It. Off."
Slowly, the pledges and I started to undress. I thanked my lucky stars that I had decided on a plain black bra and underwear today, seeing as Caroline and Ashley were laughing at the girls who wore mismatched sets.
"Pledge!" Ashley shouted, snapping at Allison. "Front and center, you're up."
Allison cautiously walked forward, standing in front of Ashley. "Sit on the washing machine, and turn it on to max."
Allison looked confused, but did as she was told. She sat on the lid of the machine, reached behind her, and turned it on. She squealed and gripped the sides of the machine as it kicked on, shaking her around while she sat on top. "Sit still!" Ashley barked, and Allison tried her best to stop moving.
Caroline dug in her purse for a moment, revealing a black permanent marker. She stood in front of the machine with Allison on top of it and studied it for a moment, head cocked. She then uncapped the marker, and carefully drew dotted lines down Allison's thighs, across the top of her panty line, and across her belly. She stepped back and smirked, satisfied with herself.
"See this, you sluts? This is the Jiggle Test, a vital part of being a Gamma Lambda Tau", Caroline announced.
"Anything that we draw on jiggles, meaning that you're too fat as of right now to be one of us. Frat boys looooove skinny girls, which is why they love us, and if you arent thin, then get the fuck out of our chapter!"
A cheer rang out from the other members of the sorority standing behind Caroline, much to the horror of myself and the other pledges.
"Each one of your dumb asses is getting up on this washer, and if you don't lose the weight by the time you're initiated, you're dropped."
The crowd went silent, each of us looking at each other with fearful eyes. Was she serious?
Turns out, she was deadly serious. We each took a turn on the washer, getting marked where our biggest insecurities lied. Some girls ran out crying, while others sat on the washer like it was a throne. Many girls left, deciding that being in a sorority wasn't worth the humiliation. I took on the challenge, receiving lines on my upper thighs and across my lower stomach, much like Allison. I had decided to go through with it, deciding right then and there that I was not going to fall for their intimidation. No matter what these bitched wanted to do to scare me out of making it through Hell Week, I wasn't going to let them break me.

"This shit is so foul," I grumbled before plugging my nose and chugging a kale smoothie that I had made for breakfast. I wanted to make it through Hell Week and eventually get initiated more than anything. I was bound and determined to become a sister of Gamma Lambda Tau, which meant I had to jump through every hoop they had lined up for me like a show pony. This meant that I had to lose the weight that they were expecting me to lose.
Allison and I were working together to get ourselves down to our goal weights, and we had come up with a very strict, regimented diet and gym plan. We both woke up at six a.m. this morning and met each other at the campus gym at 7 to get in a workout. Then, we went home, showered, and had this disgustingly green drink for breakfast.
I rinsed the remnants of the kale smoothie into the sink and put the cup in the dishwasher. I unfortunately had class today, and then I was expected back at the sorority house at 8 p.m. for the second day of hell week. I drove to campus for my lecture, and after that I went to the library to get some work done during my break in classes.
I was sitting at one of the round tables in the corner putting the finishing touches on an essay when I saw someone pull out the chair across from me and plop into it and kick their feet up onto the adjacent chair.
"This seat taken?"
I looked over the top of my computer screen to find JJ seated across the table with a shy smile on his face. I smiled back and shook my head, closing my laptop.
"Hey, how are you?" I asked, shuffling around some of my notes and shoving them into a folder.
"Good, how are you?", he answered. God, the small talk was killing me.
"Good, good. How were you after that party?" I chuckled, putting the folder into my backpack. I was grasping at straws trying to figure out something to start a conversation about. JJ grimaced, and ran a hand through his hair.
"Not too great, I'm gonna be honest." I giggled at his response. I hadn't been too great the morning after myself. Allison had video messaged me from the bathroom with her head in the toilet, and I had been in the same position when I received it.
"I saw you from over there and figured I'd come say hi. Whatcha workin on?", he continued, changing the subject.
"Oh, it was an essay for my literature class," I responded, sliding my laptop into my backpack. JJ nodded and sat up, his feet hitting the floor with a thud. He leaned forward in the chair as I was zipping up my backpack.
"Well, since you're free tonight, wanna watch a movie?" he asked, then flashed me a smirk.
I looked at him pointedly, standing up from my chair and throwing my backpack on. "Who said I was free tonight?"
JJ looked up at me, his smirk growing. "You did. You finished your essay," he explained, waving his hand at the seat and then at me.
"That doesn't mean I'm free. I have to be at the sorority house at eight. But, if that doesn't run too long, I'll take you up on it. I'll let you know." With that, I turned on my heel and waltzed off to my next class with a spring in my step.
