The four of them returned to the compound in a silence so profound it felt like a living thing, wrapping around them and swallowing every sound. The hum of the jet's engines had long faded, replaced by an oppressive quiet that settled over the team as they disembarked. Their footsteps echoed dully on the tarmac, each step a reminder of the weight they carried.
Sera walked at the head of the group, her shoulders hunched and her gaze fixed on the ground. Bucky stayed close, his hand occasionally brushing against her arm, a silent offer of support. Sam and Yelena flanked them, their faces etched with worry. The evening sky was a deep indigo, and the stars seemed to shine with an indifferent brilliance.
The compound loomed ahead, a fortress of steel and glass. As they approached, the enormity of their situation settled heavily over them. The realization of what they had witnessed—Sera's sister, Evie, alive and in the clutches of HYDRA—hung in the air, palpable and unrelenting. The doors of the compound swung open, and the bright lights inside seemed harsh against the enveloping darkness of their thoughts. The usual buzz of activity in the compound was muted, a contrast to the storm that raged within them.
Sera sat on the edge of her bed, staring blankly at the wall. The events of the day weighed heavily on her, and she felt the sting of exhaustion settling into her bones. The room was dimly lit, shadows stretching across the floor, a stark contrast to the chaos that had unfolded earlier.
A soft knock on the slightly open door broke her reverie. She glanced up to see Bucky standing there, his expression gentle but concerned. "Mind if I come in?" he asked quietly. Sera nodded, not even bothering to try and muster a smile. "Sure."
Bucky stepped into the room, closing the door behind him. He walked over and took a seat next to her on the bed. For a moment, neither of them spoke, the silence filled with unspoken words and shared pain. "How are you holding up, kid?" Bucky finally asked, his voice low and soothing. Sera shrugged, her eyes still fixed on the wall. "I don't know. Everything's just... a lot right now." Bucky nodded, understanding. "Yeah, I get that. It's been a rough day."
She turned to look at him, her blue eyes filled with confusion and hurt. "Why does it feel like everything's falling apart?" Bucky took a deep breath, searching for the right words. "Because sometimes, it does. But that doesn't mean we can't pick up the pieces and keep going. You're stronger than you think, Ace."
"It's hard to believe that sometimes." Bucky reached out, gently placing a hand on her shoulder. "I know it is. But you have people who care about you. People who will fight for you, no matter what." She swallowed hard, her voice barely above a whisper. "I just feel so lost." Bucky squeezed her shoulder reassuringly. "We'll find our way, together. One step at a time. You're not alone in this, Sera." She looked down at her hands, taking in his words. "Thanks, Bucky. That means a lot."
He gave her a small, encouraging smile. "Anytime, kiddo. You know where to find me." As he stood up to leave, Sera's voice stopped him. "Bucky?" He turned back to her. "Yeah?"
"Thanks for being here," she said softly. Bucky nodded, his expression warm. "Always, Ace. Get some rest. We'll figure this out." With that, he left the room, closing the door gently behind him. Sera let out a shaky breath, feeling a little lighter with his words echoing in her mind.
After he closed Sera's door, Bucky found Yelena in one of the quieter hallways of the compound, her back against the wall, arms crossed, staring at the floor.
"Hey," he said gently as he approached. "Mind some company?"
Yelena looked up, her eyes softening when she saw him. "Of course not."
Bucky leaned against the wall next to her, their shoulders almost touching but not quite. "It's been a long day," he murmured.
Yelena nodded. "Yeah, it has." She sighed, running a hand through her hair. "Sometimes it feels like there's no end to it."
Bucky glanced at her, his eyes filled with empathy. "We've had worse, haven't we?"
Yelena's lips twitched into a small smile. "Yeah, I suppose we have."
They fell into a comfortable silence, the weight of the day's events hanging between them. Bucky reached out, his fingers brushing hers for a brief moment before dropping to his side again. "You're not alone in this, you know," he said quietly.
Yelena turned to him, her gaze intense. "Neither are you."
Bucky met her eyes, his expression serious. "We've got each other's backs."
Her lips curved into a small, almost sad smile. "I know we do."
Their conversation grew quieter, more intimate, as they stood there, sharing their thoughts and fears in the soft glow of the hallway lights. The bond between them was palpable, a mix of respect, trust, and something deeper, something unspoken but understood.
As they stood there, the world outside the compound seemed to fade away, leaving just the two of them, bound by their shared experiences and their unwavering commitment to each other. The silence stretched, comfortable and warm, until Yelena broke it with a soft murmur, "Thank you, Bucky."
He nodded, his gaze steady on hers. "Anytime, Doll."
Yelena's smile widened just a bit, and they stayed there, in that quiet moment, finding solace in each other's presence.
The silence between Bucky and Yelena grew charged, their faces only inches apart. Bucky's gaze flickered down to her lips, and for a moment, the world seemed to narrow down to just the two of them.
Yelena took a small step closer, her breath mingling with his. She raised a hand, gently touching his cheek. Bucky leaned in, his eyes half-closed.
Just as their lips were about to meet, a voice broke through the quiet.
"Hey, lovebirds!" Sam's voice rang out, full of amusement.
Yelena and Bucky jumped apart, turning to see Sam leaning against the doorframe, a broad grin on his face.
"Really, Barnes? In the middle of the hallway?" Sam teased, his eyebrows waggling.
Bucky rolled his eyes, a faint flush coloring his cheeks. "What do you want, Wilson?"
Sam chuckled, shaking his head. "I think it's cute. But we've got a debriefing to attend. We need to go over the party and everything else that went down."
Yelena sighed, stepping back but keeping her eyes on Bucky for a moment longer. "Duty calls," she said with a small, resigned smile.
Bucky nodded, reluctantly pulling away. "Alright, let's go."
As they walked down the hallway, Sam fell in step beside them, his grin never fading. "You know, you two are adorable. Who knew the Winter Soldier had a soft side?"
Bucky shot him a withering look. "Shut up, Sam."
Sam laughed, patting Bucky on the back. "Hey, no judgment here. Just saying it's nice to see."
Yelena smirked, glancing at Bucky. "Maybe you should listen to him for once."
Bucky huffed, but there was a faint smile tugging at his lips. "Yeah, yeah."
They reached the briefing room, where the rest of the team was already gathered. Sera looked up, her eyes still red but a determined look on her face. Bucky and Yelena took their seats, ready to go over everything that had happened and plan their next steps. Despite the heaviness of the day, the brief moment of almost-intimacy between Bucky and Yelena lingered, a small comfort amid the chaos.
