I made Jungkook wait for me after school, as usual, to get some things done since he had a car. But today, of all days, it had been raining since the moment we arrived there, and when we got to his car, it wouldn't start. He fiddled with the engine for a bit, but it was no use. I waited inside, but when he shook his head, I had to step out, using my backpack as protection.
"It's not working, and there's no way I can fix it in this rain," he said, frustrated. "We should just walk before it gets worse."
I sighed and agreed. We started walking, and at first, the conversation was normal, casual. Then it escalated into an argument, as it often did.
"This is all your fault, by the way" he told me, clearly annoyed. "Why do you always make me wait for you?"
"Duh, because you're the only one who can drive me home," I said, equally irritated. "Why do you always have to complain about it?"
"Because it's always the same thing with you!" he retorted, his voice rising. "You could have ridden the bus, but no. You act like everything revolves around you, Jieun. Sometimes, I have other things to do too, you know."
I felt my temper flare at his accusation. "Oh, so now it's my fault that your car won't start? Maybe if you took better care of it, we wouldn't be here!"
"And maybe if you weren't so self-centered, we wouldn't be arguing all the time—don't turn this on me."
"Self-centered? Are you serious right now?!" I barked, my voice getting louder.
"Yes, Little Miss Perfect, who can do no wrong."
I had enough. "You know what? Forget it. I'm walking home by myself." I turned on my heel and started walking away faster to put some distance between us.
"Jieun, wait!" he called after me, but I ignored him.
The rain was coming down harder now, and I was almost getting drowned. It was impossible to be around Jungkook without him getting a rise out of me these days. Even though we had moments—those odd, intense moments neither of us could name—he just got on my nerves so quickly as if nothing had changed. No matter how close we were getting, he always found a way to push my buttons and make me want to scream.
Suddenly, I felt his hand grab mine, stopping me in my tracks. "Hey! Jieun, enough of this. Stop," His voice was softer now, and it caught me off guard.
I looked up at him, breathing heavily from the argument and the fast-paced walk. He held my hand tightly, and for a minute, my anger was gone.
"I'm sorry," he muttered. "I just... I don't know what's going on with me... with us."
