In the morning, Jieun stood by the window, staring outside, wrapped up in my shirt. She looked lost in thought, her fingers playing absentmindedly with the fabric. I watched her quietly from behind for a moment before moving closer. My arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her into me.
"Wanna look around?" I asked, resting my chin on her shoulder. "It's pretty big here."
She didn't respond right away. Her eyes stayed fixed on whatever she was seeing outside, but I knew her mind wasn't there. It was still back home, in the argument with mom. "I'm not sure..."
I gave her a gentle shake, trying to pull her out of it. "Come on, you'll like it."
She sighed softly, then nodded. "Okay."
It didn't take much to get her to relax once we were out on campus. The weather was perfect, and as we wandered around, I could see some of the pressure leave her shoulders. She was starting to look more like herself, laughing a little at the jokes I made, pointing out things she found interesting. It was a relief, seeing her enjoy something—even if it was just temporary. We almost forgot why she was there in the first place.
We ran into some of my friends, and for the first time since we stepped outside, I felt a wave of nerves hit me. How the hell was I supposed to introduce her? As what? I fumbled a bit, trying to find the right words. Jieun must've noticed because she jumped in.
"I'm his childhood friend," she said with a bright smile. "Nice to meet you all."
My friends nodded, and the conversation moved on, but inside, I was still caught up in that moment. Jieun didn't seem bothered, though. She was enjoying herself with them, and it made me pleased.
When they asked her what she wanted to do after school, her face lit up in a way that was almost contagious.
"I was hoping to become an artist..."
"Yeah, she's really talented," I told them. "Her work's amazing. Don't be surprised if you end up with one of her drawings in your living room one day."
"That's nice," one of the girls said. "Maybe you can even enroll here next year to be closer to Jungkook."
Jieun turned to me, her eyes soft, and smiled like I'd just given her the best compliment in the world. I didn't usually talk about her like that, especially not around other people. Now, openly saying it, I saw how much it meant to her.
At some point during the conversation, one of the dorm staff members approached me, pulling me to a corner. "Your father's here," they said quietly. "He looks a bit worried, so you better get there soon."
My stomach dropped. I glanced over at Jieun, who was in the middle of laughing at something one of my friends said. She looked genuinely happy for the first time in what felt like forever, and I didn't want to ruin that moment for her. But there was no avoiding it.
