Jieun returned home after taking the dog for a walk, her heart fluttering from each text exchange with Jungkook. She had been grinning, fingers flying over her phone, until she stepped into the kitchen. Her mom was there, and the moment she saw her, that smile vanished faster than a shadow at noon. She quickly tucked her phone away.

Her mom was at the counter, chopping vegetables, not even bothering to glance up. There were no greetings, no inquiries about how her day had been, just the relentless sound of the knife meeting the cutting board.

Jieun shuffled to the cabinet, pouring herself a glass of water. As she turned to lean against the counter, the woman seized the moment, her voice icy. "So, about that young man who came over yesterday... The one studying with you and Mina?"

"What about it?"

"Quite charming, isn't he?"

Jieun rolled her eyes, knowing exactly where this was headed. "He's just a friend, Mom. No intention of dating him."

"You two looked pretty cozy... It wouldn't hurt to put yourself out there a bit more. You won't find a boyfriend if you keep spending all your time in your room like some kind of prisoner."

Jieun took a deep breath, trying to keep her cool. "What's wrong with spending time at home? I have friends, and I'm not hiding from anyone."

Her mom shrugged an icy dismissal. "You need to take opportunities when they come."

"So are you saying I'm missing out on opportunities when I don't give chances to all the guys that cross my way?"

"I never said that," she sighed. "Stop misinterpreting my words. "

"Then what is this really about, Mom? Why are you so fixated on my love life all of a sudden?"

"I'm just looking out for you. I don't want you to waste your youth."

"Looking out for me?" Jieun scoffed, putting the glass away to cross her arms. "Cut the crap already, just say what you mean."

Her eyes narrowed, not bothering to scold her for her chosen words. "Jieun—" she began, but was cut off.

"No! Say it to my face! What do you really want?!"

After a tense silence, her mother's defenses crumbled. "Alright, fine, do you really want to know what's on my mind? I'll tell you," she dropped the utensils, staring daggers at her daughter. "I'm actually relieved Jungkook is away. Yes, and I hope he finds a lovely girl, dates her, and if god allows it, marries her even," she admitted icily. "I hope the same for you."
