JJ - 15

Everything seemed to irritate me when I started High School. Mood swings were my new normal, courtesy of those pesky hormones. It didn't help that my sister, who was fourteen now, was going through the same thing.

We fought over everything—who got to use the bathroom first, who left the kitchen a mess, who needed to bathe the dog, and even whose turn it was to do the dishes. Our parents were at their wit's end, constantly mediating our arguments and trying to keep the peace.

Jieun had taken up drawing seriously, and her sketches were becoming more professional every day. She had dreams of becoming an artist, and her talent was undeniable. Every spare moment she had was spent with her sketchpad, creating beautiful pieces that she hoped would one day lead to a career in art.

She often spoke of attending art school, where she could refine her skills and make a name for herself. Her dedication was nice, I admitted, but sometimes it felt like her art was just another thing for us to fight about.

Our frequent arguments put a strain on our parents. They tried to be patient, yet the constant bickering wore them down. They'd sit us down for long talks about respecting each other and managing our tempers, but it rarely made a difference.

One evening, I was in my room, playing video games on my computer with my headphones on and the music blasting over the speakers. It was my way of escaping school stress, family, and my sister's annoying existence.

Jieun was in her own room that was right next to mine, trying to draw something for an online art competition she was entering. She needed peace and quiet, but the noise from my room was anything but. I didn't notice when she barged in, her face set in a scowl. I was too absorbed in my mission to care. But then she marched over to my console and turned everything off without warning.

"What the fuck, Jieun?!" I shouted, ripping off my headphones. "I was in the middle of a game!"

"And I'm in the middle of trying to win a competition!" she yelled back. "Your stupid music is so loud I can't concentrate!"

"Too bad! It's my room, and I can do what I want," I snapped, getting up and stepping toward her. "You can't just come in here and turn off my stuff!"

"Well, maybe if you weren't so selfish, you'd realize that other people live here too!" she fired, not backing down. "It's always about you, Jungkook! You never think of your actions, it's just about how you feel, what you want! I'm tired!"

"Oh, please, like you're any better," I retorted. "You're so wrapped up in your little art world, acting like it's the most important thing ever."

"Because it is important to me!" she screamed, her face red with anger. "Just because you don't care about anything else doesn't mean you get to ruin things for other people!"

The argument escalated, with voices getting louder and words becoming harsher. She shoved me, and I shoved her back harder. She lost her balance and crashed into my desk, knocking over my gaming console. Enraged, she lunged at me, and we began grappling, pushing, and pulling, each of us too angry to stop.

When the yelling became too loud, it caught the attention of our parents; they burst into the room. Dad grabbed Jieun, pulling her away from me, while Mom stepped between us, horrified.,

"Enough!" Dad shouted, holding a struggling Jieun. "What are you guys doing?!"

Mom turned to me. "Jungkook, sit down now! We need to talk about this."

Jieun was still fuming, tears of anger in her eyes. "You don't get it, Mom! He's always so selfish!"

"And you're not?" I shot back, still furious.

"That's enough from both of you!" Dad's voice was firm, brooking no argument. "Jieun, calm down. Jungkook, sit."

I sat on my bed with a sigh, my eyes rolling. Jieun stood by Dad, crossing her arms.

"This behavior is unacceptable," Dad began, looking between us. "Has our house turned into a jungle? Fighting like two animals, what is this now? You both need to learn how to communicate without resorting to violence. We didn't raise you this way."

Mom nodded. "We understand that you're both going through a lot right now, but that doesn't excuse what just happened here. You need to apologize to each other."

I looked at Jieun, taking a deep breath and smiling the fakest smile I could possibly fake. "I'm sorry for shoving you, little sister. I didn't mean to hurt you."

Jieun poked her cheek with her tongue, her jaw clenching. She knew I wasn't being sincere and did the same. "I'm sorry too, big brother. I shouldn't have turned off your game. I was just really frustrated."

That was the only way our parents could leave us alone, and we both knew it.

They seemed satisfied, but to our horror, they made us sit down and talk through what had happened for a long twenty minutes. As we sat there, forced to apologize and talk things out, I realized something important.

Despite our constant fighting, Jieun was my sister, and we needed to find a way to get along. We were both growing up, dealing with our own struggles, but that didn't mean we had to be enemies.

From that day on, we tried to be more civil. It wasn't perfect, and we still had our arguments, but slowly, things almost began to change for the better.

Almost.
