  Rhodolite opened his eyes.

He was in the Sky Kingdom, as far as he could see. Mountains everywhere surrounding him. He tried to move, but he couldn't. Rhodolite looked down. His sharp talons were stuck in some purple, sticky substance, and it was creeping up his legs. He could feel it up his back legs, too. He snorted some smoke on it on one leg. It slowed, but kept it up. He breathed some small flames on it. it froze for a second, then kept going. He breathed fire at his feet, knowing it was the source. It worked, so he did so on the rest of his legs.

Rhodolite finally broke free, immediately taking into the air before looking down. He was shocked with what his eyes were greeted with.

There was purple ooze everywhere. From the valley to halfway up the mountains, the purple substance covered the land in a thick layer on the earth. Dragons were up on the peaks of the mountains, flying up the peaks, or hovering like Rhodolite. The dragonets who were too young to learn to fly were carried by their parents, and orphans by caretakers.

Rhodolite closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and opened his eyes again. Looking around, he spotted the Sky Palace, or Queen Ruby's palace. He shot threw the air, flying as fast as he could, to the castle.

When he got near, he was as shocked as he could possibly be.

When he had spotted the palace, he thought it was the distance that made it look purple, and when he was flying, he was flying too fast to look down. As he looked now, the Sky Palace was completely covered in goo, and the valley was also covered in the sticky slime.

Rhodolite groaned. Then he sighed. He flew the rest of the way to the palace, and melted all the substance off  of the lower palace and the ground around it. Just as he'd figured: without a source, the goo couldn't re-cover the palace, and slowly shrank down in groups that quickly dissolved. Next he arranged rocks in a perimeter around the palace, in a way so they can't go under or around the rocks. He made sure it was secure, and then went to look for the queen.

He finally found her, and poked his head in. "Your Majesty?"

Queen Ruby turned her head. "Ah, you are the savior of the palace. A guard saw you arranging the rocks."

Rhodolite ducked his head. "Yes, Your Majesty."

"Hmm." Ruby gave a single nod. "I approve. I assume you are the one who saved the valley?"

"Oh, n-no, Your Highness," Rhodolite stammered. "I only dissolved the palace substance, not the entire valley."

"Oh, but I suppose if you saved the place where the fastest fliers are, then I suppose you did save the valley. They could fly around, dissolve all the goo. Oh, and how do you dissolve the substance, anyhow?"

  "With fire, Your Majesty."

"No particular heat? Just normal fire?"

  "Yes."

"Very well." Ruby nodded. Rhodolite took that as permission to leave. "Oh, what's your name?"

  "Rhodolite, Your Highness."

  "Then, Rhodolite-- Thank you."

  "You're welcome, my queen."

Now Rhodolite left with several guards with Queen Ruby's permission.

"You two, go east, start from the bottom; it's their source," Rhodolite instructed. The guards nodded, and took off. "You three, the west." When they left, Rhodolite turned to the remaining five guards. "You three, the north. And you two, with me to the south."

Rhodolite and his guards flew around their side of the valley, starting at the bottom. When that area was cleared, the guards flew higher, and Rhodolite stayed at the bottom. After the sun set, all the guards and Rhodolite slowly flew to the palace, exhausted. The guards went back home for the night, and Rhodolite was given a place to sleep.

The next day, Rhodolite woke up, stretched, and looked out the window. Rhodolite thought he could scream. All his and the guards' hard work--gone. The goo was creeping up from the center of the valley again.

Rhodolite walked up to the queen's room. She was staring out her window. "Your Majesty?"

"Yes?" Ruby turned her head towards Rhodolite. "Oh. Hello, Rhodolite," she said, seemingly not very surprised with Rhodolite's appearance, if not a little tired.

Rhodolite bowed his head respectively. "Hello."

"I suppose you are here to discuss the matters of the purple substance?"

"Yes. How, do you think, did it grow so quickly? We dissolved all the goo yesterday!"

"Now, now, calm down," the queen soothed. "I'm sure it will be all right. I will have my scientists work on this immediately. It seems it is sourced at the center of the valley. I will investigate as well. Would you like to accompany me?"

"Are you joking?" Queen Ruby herself was inviting him to investigate with her?! "Yes, of course! Thank you so much!"

Ruby nodded. "Now, are you going to prepare, or just stand there?"

"On my way!" Rhodolite dashed away. Then he popped his head in, bobbed his head, and dashed away again, the SkyWing queen's amused laughter ringing in the halls.

About an hour later, the queen, Rhodolite, and several guards--about fifteen--, and the two scientists of the Sky Kingdom left to investigate the sticky slime.

It didn't take long, only a few minutes to get there. Rhodolite turned to his queen. "your Majesty, I have an idea?"

  "Yes?"

"I was thinking, me and the guards could fly around you and the scientists while dissolving the goo? And not bother with the outsides, they'll dissolve quickly anyway."

"I was thinking the same thing," replied Queen Ruby. She nodded. "You're a smart one."

Rhodolite blushed. "Thank you, Your Majesty."

"Spread out!" The queen's voice rang throughout the valley.

  The investigation had begun.
