I never thought that thousands would accompany me in this madness. And even in the face of doubt, in the face of fear, they continued by my side, not in search of glory and riches, but to protect the little they had. And from the bottom of my heart, I had no words to thank the reserve forces who accompanied us to our twilight. They didn't have to do it. And yet, they were the bravest of us all.
We all marched to the front, and both Crosta and Murphy agreed with me to separate the forces into three independent groups. We did not know exactly what the situation on the front would be like, and the best thing would be to distribute all the troops equally.
Crosta would march to the right front, as I will march to the left. Murphy was the most senior among us, so he would go to the front, where he could better control the situation if something unforeseen arose. However, we were aware that our duty would be to follow the orders of any Krieg officer present, as there would be no time to delegate command in such a desperate situation.
All men and women were distributed of their own free will. We were so disorganized that the battalions that previously made up us were now a simple amorphous mass of disoriented combatants. Even so, my surprise was great when each and every one of the armed civilians decided to follow in my footsteps, and not those of some more experienced officer. Something that made me understand the trust that the residents of Cantus placed in me... As well as their hopes. An overwhelming weight.
However, nothing surprised me more than seeing a group of reserve forces soldiers approach without anyone ordering them to. Men and women who had no reason to defy orders and fight by my side. Astra Militarun soldiers who fought alongside me on the front, and who wanted to continue what they had not finished.
And so, the three groups split up to our respective positions, while Crosta, Murphy and I exchanged one last look. A farewell look, because we were certain that this would be the last time we would see each other. The only one who took a different path was Mason himself, whom I had ordered to find whoever was in command of the Krieg regiment and inform him of our return.
However, the fact that I chose to advance on the left side was not a mere coincidence. First, because I wanted to see faces once again with those grenchin bastards who deceived us and ended the lives of Purshok and thousands of soldiers, with their clever dirty strategies. And on the other hand, because it seemed to me that the positions of the batteries on the right, the cannon shots were fired much more frequently than those on the left. When I remembered that both sectors were symmetrically distributed... Something bad was definitely happening there.
Our advance across the muddy ground was much faster than our retreat. The boots wanted to come off our feet, but our determination at that moment would not allow us to stop in the face of anything we were not capable of overcoming. I went to the front, confident that those who decided to fight at my side would follow me without hesitation. Knowing that, deep inside, they were motivated more by fear than by the longing for victory. And I know, because I thought exactly the same thing.
When we got close enough, I knew my assumptions were right. We were still not able to define exactly what was happening, but we could see the laser shots that rushed from the center of the formations to the outside and vice versa. And I immediately knew it. Those greenskins that forced us to flee like rats, was fighting right there. And I was convinced that they would never see us arrive.
— PREPARE THE BALLONETS! —
My voice screamed as if those were my last words. My feet became lighter from the adrenaline that bombarded my body, and the rage that coursed through my body at that moment. Time froze in front of my eyes, while I saw the hundreds of greenskins who did not see us arrive from the rear. All, with their weapons pointed towards the Krieg regiments.
