CHAPTER FIVE
"IS IT A RED flag if a guy says he wanted to see you again, but wouldn't even ask you for your number?"
josie looked up from the register as she punched in her numbers to take out the till. "what?"
mackenzie leaned against the counter. "i went out on a date with someone and he said he wanted to see me again, but didn't even get my number." she started. "and when i asked him if he was going to ask for it, all he said was that he'd get it."
"did you know him before your date?" she raised an eyebrow.
"not really, but he works with lucy." there was a small pause. "he's kind of her boss."
josie smirked, "so he's a cop?"
"he's a cop." mack confirmed.
"cops are trouble." josie hummed. "and he's her boss? that makes him like what? mid-forties?"
"thirty-nine." the blonde corrected. "and it was just supposed to be something to get lucy's short sleeves, but then we actually had a really good time and he said he wanted to see me again and showed up here to get coffee during his shift and i'm just–"
"i'm sorry, what?" josie's eyes widened, cutting mack's rant off. "he showed up here? when?"
mack licked her lips. "two days ago."
"but he hasn't asked you for your number? that's so confusing and unfortunately, i'd consider that a massive red flag." josie shook her head.
mackenzie let out a groan as the two of them finished closing up the cafe. "what do i do about it?"
"well, that's entirely up to you." josie shrugged her shoulders. "if you're curious to see what may actually come of it you could always show up to the station and try to run into him. but play it cool, obviously. make him think you're there to see lucy or something."
the blonde let the idea weigh on her for a few moments before shaking her head. "maybe he never asked for my number for a reason. he did say how i was too young for him before we had gone out."
"age is just a number, sweetie." josie stated. "you and i both know that."
mack mumbled, "i guess."
the two finished everything before heading out to their cars. "don't think too much about it." josie said, bumping her hip against mack's. "if it's meant to be, it will be."
"thanks, jos." mack chuckled. "i'll see you soon."
the younger girl smiled, "enjoy your days off. i'll call if there's anything i can't handle."
"thanks, love. see you soon!" the two girls climbed into their cars and headed away from the cafe. mack always took a couple days a month off to herself so that she didn't feel drained being at the cafe all the time. owning a business can take a lot out of a person. granted, she loved what she did, but a mini vacation here and there was relaxing.
leo was standing in front of the open fridge, debating on what he wanted to eat, when mack arrived home. he glanced over at the girl and gave her a 'sup' nod before returning to his search for food. "did you bring me food?" he asked as she placed all her things on the countertop.
"i brought home the leftover chocolate chip scones for lucy. you can steal one if you want to." she slid the box towards him and he excitedly shut the fridge, making his way over to steal one. mack watched as his stealthy fingers grabbed two before he closed the box and rushed to his room, thanking the girl as he did so. she only rolled her eyes at the boy before making sure the box was fully closed and heading to the bathroom to get into the shower.
she had shot lucy a text earlier about the scones and she responded excitedly, saying the blonde should bring them over and stay for a movie night to which she said yes. she took her time in the shower, letting the warm water drench her hair and body. she always felt the most relaxed in the shower. it was just always the most calming time for her.
once she was dressed she grabbed her belongings and made her way back out the door, making her way in the direction of lucy's place. the drive wasn't long; the girl didn't live that far away. the elevator in her building was broken, so she had to walk up five flights of stairs, but she wasn't complaining; she needed the exercise. she didn't bother knocking on the door as she swung it open, hands full of stuff. she was surprised to see lucy and tim standing in her living room, looking as if they were in the middle of a heated argument.
"oh, hey." her cheeks immediately heated up from embarrassment. "should i come back or?"
"no," lucy shook her head. "tim was just saying how i messed up today at work." her arms were crossed over her chest as she sent the older man a glare.
"did anyone get hurt?" mackenzie asked as her eyes met tim's.
tim narrowed his eyes, "no."
"did you end up arresting whoever you needed to?" the girl asked.
tim licked his lips, "yes."
"then it doesn't matter." she smiled sweetly and tim opened his mouth to speak, but nothing came out as mack placed her things on the counter. "i have the scones."
"perfect." lucy smiled before turning to tim. "you can go now."
"what if i want to stay?" he looked at the brunette. "scones sound really good right now." he walked up to mack and flashed her a smile as he opened the box of scones and grabbed one, taking a bite. "shit, these are so good." he practically moaned before looking between the two girls. "so, what are we doing tonight?"
"what do you mean, "what are we doing tonight?"? you're not staying." lucy shook her head.
"why not?" tim shrugged his shoulders. he turned to mack, "you want me to stay, right?" mack's eyes were focused on the stubble on his face and she just shrugged her shoulders.
"see? she wants you to leave." lucy tried waving him off.
"she wants me to stay." tim smirked, eyeing mack up and down. the blonde girl didn't know what to say.
"we're going to watch a chick flick." lucy stated quickly.
"that's fine." tim shrugged as his eyes never left mack's. "let's start this chick flick then, yeah?"
AHHHHH.
