CHAPTER FOUR

"HOW DID YOUR DATE go?" leo asked as mack opened the fridge to grab the milk.

she shrugged, "it was fine. lucy's getting her short sleeves." the smile on her face grew as she poured the milk into her cereal.

"was officer douchebag nice at least?" he questioned.

"he was alright." she stated. "it definitely ended better than it started."

"you're certain she's getting her short sleeves?" he watched her return the milk to the fridge before she sat down and started eating her breakfast. "what if he didn't have as good of a time as you thought and he tells her she can't wear her short sleeves?"

"that won't happen." she said.

leo raised an eyebrow. "how're you so sure?"

the blonde flipped her hair over her shoulder and smiled at her brother. "because he told me he wanted to see me again."

"oh?" he smirked. "and what did you say?"

"i said it might be able to happen if he let lucy wear her short sleeves."

"and he said just 'okay'?"

she shrugged her shoulders, "basically."

"i wouldn't say she got her short sleeves until you speak to her. he could've been full of shit."

"he doesn't seem like the lying type. he's too cocky for that." she waved her brother off.

leo hummed under his breath. "we'll see."

she rolled her eyes at the boy before finishing her cereal. josie was opening the cafe that day, so she wasn't in any kind of rush to get there. leo placed his bowl and spoon in the dishwasher before wandering off to his room, closing the door behind him. the blonde finished eating before putting her own dishes in the dishwasher. she made her way back to her room to get dressed in a nice shirt and jeans before she grabbed her purse, making her way out of her shared apartment.

MACKENZIE WAVED AT THE little red haired girl as she exited the cafe with her mom, a chocolate chip cookie in her hand. she returned to the register, ringing up the next customer's coffee. a few more customers had come through the door before things started to get slow, so she made her way to the back to finish up paperwork. she'd been going through all the cafe's finances to make sure everything was still in order. it was a regular thing that she did due to her anxiety. she never wanted to lose her business. one of her employees had called out, so since the front was short she told them to notify her if it got super busy so she could help out. it was just after lunch hours and she knew that the cafe always started to slow down at that time.

her phone had been blowing up for awhile due to her brother meeting some girl while he was at the gym. he was gushing over how attractive her personality was more than her good looks. mackenzie knew that if her brother was referring to a girl's personality more than her looks it meant he was already in too deep. she just hoped that the girl wouldn't end up breaking his heart. she'd had to clean up the pieces other girl's had left when they broke his heart before.

leo and mack were the type of siblings to have each other's backs at all times. there was never a moment where they weren't there for each other, even when they were in a fight or just simply annoyed with each other. loyalty was a huge thing to both of them and they had remained loyal to each other their entire lives.

"hey, mackenzie?" the blonde looked over to see one of her younger employees peeking her head into the office. "there's someone asking for you at the counter. should i tell them you're busy?" she asked as she spotted the pile of paperwork in front of the owner.

"did they say who they were?" mack hadn't been expecting anyone.

"no," she shook her head. "he came up to the counter and immediately asked for you. tall, good looking, in a cop uniform."

the blonde's eyes slightly widened and she dropped her pen. "shit." she cursed lightly under her breath. she quickly stood and brushed her hands down her shirt to try and get rid of the wrinkles. "how do i look? do i look okay?"

the young girl smiled, "you look amazing, as always." she eyed her boss as she continued to make sure she looked presentable. "is he your boyfriend?"

mackenzie's eyes widened, "no, just someone i know." she shook all the nerves out of her body before making her way to the front, smiling as she approached the counter to see tim dressed in his uniform. "i'm surprised to see you here." she stated. "can i get you anything?" she eyed him up and down, rather enjoying the sight of him in a uniform. he had been in regular clothing their first encounter, so seeing him with his work attire on was a nice thing to see.

"i'm patrolling in the area with chen." he stated. "i figured i'd come grab a coffee before i head back out." he shrugged his shoulders. "i also just really wanted to try one of your famous coffees that chen hasn't suddenly stopped talking about."

mack licked her lips. "where is lucy?"

"in the shop." he stated. "i told her i'd grab it for us."

the blonde tilted her head, "she couldn't have come in with you?"

a small smirk appeared on his lips. "i may have told her i wanted to come in alone so i could say hi."

"interesting." the girl smiled, her cheeks tinting red. "so you want lucy's regular?"

"two, please." he nodded.

mack looked over her shoulder at the girl that had informed her he was there in the first place. "two of lucy's regular, please." the girl smiled with a nod, turning to make the coffees. mack turned back to the man, eyeing him up and down once again.

"you know," he placed both his hands on the countertop and leaned forward.

mack mocked him, doing the same. "what?"

he licked his lips, his eyes falling to look at her own. his voice was quiet so only she could hear. "if you keep checking me out i might have to just print you out a picture of me to frame."

she hummed, jokingly stating, "i might have to take you up on that."

as the coffee were placed in front of her she stepped back so they weren't so close anymore. she reached for the coffees, handing them over to the cop. "on the house."

"no way. i'm paying." he shook his head.

"no, you're not." she forced the coffees into his hands. "are you ever going to ask me for my number?"

he smiled, "why would i do that when i can just come in here to see you?" she didn't know what to say and he laughed lightly. "don't worry, mack. i'll get your number, i promise."

she raised an eyebrow. "is there a reason you won't just get it from me?"

"no reason." he shook his head as he headed for the door. "it was nice seeing you, mackenzie. i'll see you later."

the little bell above the door went off as he exited and she let out a breath she didn't realize she was holding before making her way back to the office to get her paperwork done.
