You woke up to the sound of your phone buzzing, the ringtone that you specifically chose when your mother calls you, it was different than everyone else's ringtones. Eyes slightly wide, you turned over to your side and picked up your phone, the screen lit up and sure enough 'Mom' was in bold text, the phone waiting to be answered.
Sliding your finger over the screen, you answered the phone with a slight yawn, followed by a 'Hello?'
"Sweetie! It's the first day of Christmas Break and you're already sleeping in?" You heard your mother's cheery voice on the other side of the line. Her cheery voice however, seemed... a bit more forced. "Don't get into the habit of sleeping in, alright? It's just going to be a pain to get you back on schedule when the break is over."
"I didn't sleep... in..." You looked over at the alarm clock beside your bed, and saw that it was 11am. Holy shit, you really did sleep in today. "Okay, well... Maybe I did sleep in a little bit, but I won't make a habit of it. Besides, there's no way cousin Tweek would let me be late to school."
"Well at least one of you are responsible." Your mother responded, her tone lighthearted as she teased you. "How's school out there, have you been keeping out of trouble? What about making any new friends?"
"Where do I start...?" You shifted in your bed to sit up more comfortably, and tapped your fingers against your bedspread as you tried to think of an appropriate place to begin retelling your mother about your adventures in this little town in Colorado. "I've been getting good grades, so far... I know after Christmas break, going into the New Years we'll start our State testing, so... I'm definitely going to try and study a bit with some friends at some point."
"Working at the family's coffee shop has actually been a rewarding experience! The amount of tips we get, learning all the new coffee combinations, or just even trying out my own. I've met so many people while working at the shop, and even found out that Tweek and I work really good together during rush hours." You couldn't help but smile as you thought about all the times you and your cousin successfully handled serving dozens of customers that flooded the lobby at a time. "I also really get along with his boyfriend, Craig. He's been really protective, it's like the older brother that I've never had."
"Oh! I didn't even tell you that I've joined the Cheer Squad, and made friends with the cheerleaders on the squad. The same goes for the baseball team that we cheer for, we're always interacting with each other one way or another. Really, though... I didn't expect to make so many friends as quickly as I did." You smiled at recalling the first time you've met the boys, the first time you met Bebe and Wendy at the coffee shop.
You could hear the sigh of relief from your mother on the other side of the line, she seemed like she must've been worried about your adjusting to South Park through the divorce. "I'm so glad you've already made some new friends, sweetie! But you've joined the cheer squad? That's the last thing I've expected from you." Your mom spoke, you could hear the shock in her voice but it sure didn't sound like it was a bad reaction.
"I guess I was really roped into it when the captain of the squad invited me before I even enrolled in the school." You couldn't help but give a sheepish smile, recalling how eager Wendy was to have you try out for the team before you even attended the school. "I didn't think I'd be joining either, but... it helps that the squad members have all been warm and welcoming, and it made it a lot easier to adjust to the High School. Same goes for cousin Tweek's friends, they've helped making school life way less intimidating."
"I know, I was so surprised to hear that you wanted to enroll in the High School and not stay on Independent Study! That's the last thing I expected from you, but honestly... It's good for you to socialize with more than just your cousin and his friends. I know back here in (hometown) you weren't really too social with the teens your age, it's relieving to hear this!" Your could hear your mother's excitement on the line. From how her voice sounded, it seemed like she was smiling.
"How are things going for you, mom?" You couldn't help but ask her in return, genuinely curious about her wellbeing and how she's managed through the recent stress of the divorce and of course, not having you there with her.
You could hear your mother let out a soft laugh on the other side of the line as she listened to your adventures in South Park so far, you could tell it was in good spirits, and that she was probably relieved that things were going well. "It's been a bit lonely around here without you here, but... My lawyer seems to have a solid case with this whole... divorce drama. He's suspecting that with how good of a case we have right now, we might even be able to finalize the divorce sooner than we had originally anticipated."
Hearing that, you felt your heart sink. It was a hard feeling to describe, sure you were happy that the divorce would be finalized, the drama would be over soon... It would sure make your mother less stressed, and she wouldn't have to worry about court sessions or your wellbeing anymore. However, the divorce being finalized sooner than anticipated could also mean that your adventure in South Park would be coming to an end. It hurt, to just think about it.
"Well, you know. Maybe after the divorce, we can start a new life out here in South Park?" You suggested to your mother, in hopes of swaying her towards moving. "It would be a new start, a new life, we'd be close to family, and you wouldn't have to worry about living near dad." You almost felt your voice crack as you attempted to persuade your mother into moving states. Sure, it was a long shot, but at this point you were willing to do whatever it takes to stay out here.
"You think we can really start a new life in South Park, sweetie?" Your mother laughed, but it seemed like she wasn't taking you seriously this time. "There's not much potential out there, it's such a small town. Sure, we'd be by your cousin, aunt and uncle, but there's not much else going for us out there."
"I mean sure, it's a small town but wouldn't that make it easier for us to adjust? I mean, I adjusted so quickly." You tried to convince her again, but moving from state to state was already a task in itself. Your mother was surely stubborn, and you really didn't want to fight her on this topic much since you honestly felt guilty about the stress she was already facing with the divorce.
There was a bit of silence between you two, you didn't really want to argue, or push the topic further. This was honestly probably a conversation best to have in person, but... then that would mean you were most likely on a plane back to your hometown. "At least think about it, please?" You felt your voice soften at your plea.
"Oh! Honey, I'm so sorry I'm going to have to cut this call a bit short. My lawyer is calling me, but I'll try and call again real soon. Okay?" You heard your mother in a hurried tone now, her voice speaking a bit quicker. "Text me, send me pictures. I love you sweetie!" She immediately hung up the phone, to probably try and not miss the phone call from her lawyer.
"I love you... too..." You murmured softly to yourself, holding your phone in front of you, realizing she hung up before you could even tell her. Your phone showed that the call had ended, and a soft sigh escaped from your lips.
The feeling of dread washed over you. It seemed like you weren't really able to get through to her, and that she wasn't taking you seriously. Your stay in South Park was most likely going to be much shorter than you've anticipated, and it hurt your heart to think about it. The thought of leaving everyone, your new friends, your new school... Your new love life?
You scrolled through your phone, and ended up on your messaging app, your thumb hovering over the texts between yourself and Kyle. You paused, glancing down at the recent messages between you two, and debated whether or not you should tell him about the phone call you'd just had with your mother. Did you really want to tell him about the thought of you leaving sooner than anticipated? That would crush him, you couldn't do that to him... But then it would be wrong to not even give him a heads up either.
So many thoughts swarmed through your head, conflicting emotions and overall you just were not feeling well from the thought of leaving soon. You didn't want to leave your family, your cousin and his boyfriend who was like a brother to you. You'd just gotten into cheerleading, and were enjoying the sisterly bond with the cheer squad. Hell, you even had a job at Tweek Bros coffee, and you didn't even have a job back in your hometown, so the extra cash was absolutely welcomed. Besides, what about the new powers you held, the superhero alter ego lifestyle you had now? You couldn't leave that all unfinished...
Before you realized it, your heart ached further, and your eyes burned as tears whelmed in them.
You weren't ready for your adventure to end. Not yet.
