On her walk home with Liv, CeeCee felt like Cinderella the day after the ball. She was so happy; it would have surprised neither of them if she had burst into a chorus of So This is Love. She walked, no, bounced, home with her arm linked with Liv's, her head occasionally resting on Liv's shoulder as she recounted the kiss over and over. Liv thought it all sounded a bit chaste, but CeeCee was over the moon, and when John had emerged from the staff cupboard Liv thought he looked as smug as if CeeCee had just been on her knees for him. If they were happy, then she was happy.

It wasn't just the kiss that had her smiling, it was how John hadn't even flinched when Dec had referred to tonight as a double date. She knew he had only been joking but she also knew John was the world's biggest overthinker and if he was worried about Celeste getting the wrong idea, he would have been quick to correct Declan. But he had said nothing. Then there was the rose... The rose she'd never got, but it was the thought that counted right?!

As they'd parted ways outside the pub John had hugged each of the girls goodnight and whispered in Celeste's ear, "I'll message you when I get home." She was used to men not keeping their promises, so she tried to take this with a pinch of salt, but she couldn't stop herself from checking her phone repeatedly on the way home, even though she knew John's journey home took far longer than theirs did.

By the time Celeste climbed into bed underneath her pink duvet she still hadn't heard from him. She was starting to feel like a deflating balloon, until she opened her messages one more time to see that he had messaged. Half an hour ago now and she'd accidentally left him on read.

CELESTE: So sorry. I missed this x

JOHN: Thought you were ignoring me again x

The reply is almost instant and her heart flutters as she imagines him also checking his phone over and over again waiting for a reply. Is he lying in his bed just like she is?! She pictures him in the t-shirt and boxers combo he'd wear in cooler weather. Envisaging how the sleeves cling to his biceps, how the t-shirt dips in at his waist that she has always envied and how visible his thigh tattoo is with his legs uncovered. She hated that tattoo when he first got it. She felt like he'd blemished his perfect body. But then she saw how resolute he stayed when everyone took the piss out of him for it. He didn't care because he liked it, and she admired that stubbornness because she was often too preoccupied over what people thought.

CELESTE: Well, you're the master of that so you'd know 😉

As soon as she hits send, she panics, is he going to read the tone of that message correctly!? She's trying to be light-hearted and flirty, but will he get that, or will he think she's still holding a grudge?! She's scared she's just undone all the progress they've made tonight.

JOHN: Play nice Celeste x

She can see his face. His lips, one of the few features that have remained the same across the years they have known each other, fixed in a straight line, twitching at the corner as he tries to stop himself from smiling because he's flirting.
