"DAD," I say in a what a hope is a charming voice.

"YES," he replies, flipping the newspaper and wrinkling his brow at whatever the government is messing up next.

"Can you take me and Emmie to your bank?" I say, moulding my facial muscles into an acceptable I wanna know everything about it smile.

My dad seems to be taken aback by my request, and suspiciously looks at me for a while. After a few awkward seconds of staring at each other, he gets up and folds his newspaper.

"Why do you suddenly ask? You could've gone when I asked you to go..." my dad says, raising one eyebrow.

"Yeah but like, before I didn't have that much interest, but now it's different you know?" I say, shuffling my feet.

"Okay. Let me think about it. I'm going on a trip to the bank anyway next week, to see how things are going. You want Emmie to come, fine with me, but you're taking responsibility for her." I internally squeal, thinking that my chance to find magic has been blown open.

"But, however, if I find you being a nuisance to any of the staff, I will personally ban you from the bank and never let you set foot in it ever again until you are eighteen." I sigh. It's going to be okay anyway, if I have Emmie. She always follows the rules, no matter what.

Now all I have to do is to tell Emmie about it!

-time skip to after dinner-

I flop on my bed, and bring out my phone.

Punctuation sucks.

-time skip to school day-

I hop off the car, hoping for Emmie to turn up so I can tell her about the developments in the case. However, as I walk through the classroom doors, I don't see her.

My guess is that she's still on the bus, or she's just late today or sick. Whatever. I'll probably text her at break time if I'm not serving detention.

"Willow Evergreen! Please come to the principal's office." The loudspeaker hurts my ears, and then hurts my heart as people start to snicker around me.

"Always getting detention."

"Always in trouble, that's what she is."

"She's getting us a bad reputation."

"For real! When I got a good mark, the teacher just said, 'Well that's unexpected of someone in your class.' Like, girl, can you act a little better?"

I trudge to the principal's office, and knock on it three times before flinging the door open.

"Ms Evergreen," says a sharp and nasal voice.

"Yes?" I reply, my tongue slightly stuck to the roof of my mouth. I didn't even cause trouble today!

"We have just been informed by Mrs Waters that Emmie Waters has gone missing," the sharp and nasal voice continues.

My heart plunges. What did Emmie do? She had texted me that she needed to 'test something out for the night'. What had she done?
