''Failed?''

''......''

''Exactly what do you mean by failed?'' Opposite the dressing mirror was the grand duchess and the first young master of the Langston family standing behind her.

The only child with her blood, Eegan.

Both mother and son were focused on the maid kneeling before their sights with her gaze lowered to the bare floor.

''....The scene is under investigation, your excellency.''

''Investigation? You dare expect me to have patience when that child is still alive in this estate?'' The grand duchess raised her voice as she fumed with her fingers, curling tightly over the exquisite gold earring in her hand.

Tempted to hit the maid with the earring, she swiftly turned her face away towards the dressing mirror. The grand duchess stared at the reflection of her precious son on the mirror and became more disturbed at the moment.

Just when she had thought that another obstacle had been gotten rid of earlier in the day, she just had to be informed of this.

''Leave.'' Knowing that venting her anger wouldn't root out the problem, the grand duchess just chased away the maid with a frustrated sigh.

''As your excellency wishes.'' The maid was quick to vanish from the mother and son's sight. Once the pair were left alone, the grand duchess let go of the earring on the dressing table and looked up worriedly at her son's reflection.

''Don't worry, Eegan. Mother will think of another plan for you.''

''....It's alright, mother.'' Eegan said after a moment. ''Since that child returned alive, we can suspect that she might have been awakened. It will make sense why those killers couldn't just get rid of one child.''

''....Your father will be the one tell us that.'' The grand duchess frowned as she thought of her son being pushed back more from his rightful place as the heir.

As if that wench's son wasn't enough for her to deal with, she had also to be watchful of a lowly child who didn't have much presence in the family until recently.

'The fourth young lady changed after the succession battle with the fourth young master. Could she have really awakened right then?' The grand duchess dwelled in her thoughts. 'But the grand duke has not announced anything yet....is he trying to protect her from harm?'

'No, he's not one to care about his children.' She was quick to dismiss that thought. 'He wasn't even around for any of their births, including Eegan's and even that wench's child.'

''Mother, do you think father will find out?'' The grand duchess came from out of her thoughts at the sound of Eegan's voice.

She froze at his question for a moment. ''...He will.'' She replied after a moment of silence. ''There's nothing hidden from the eyes of your father in the family.''

''Then would father....'' Eegan did not complete his words, but the grand duchess understood what he was trying to say.

''Clear all evidence just to be on the safe side. Even if your father is aware of our involvement, there won't be any evidence tracing back to us.''

There was nothing hidden from the eyes of her husband, even her schemes and efforts to clear the obstacles for her Eegan and designate him as the rightful heir. That was one thing she learned the hard way in the past.

''Yes mother.''

''......'' The grand duchess silently watched as Eegan walked out of the room after replying to her orders. She then returned her gaze back to her reflection in the mirror, eyeing the loose golden-colored hair and amethyst eyes of herself.
