"Aru!" yelled Kara exasperatedly. "Get your butt down here now! We're already late."
"Geez," muttered Aru, slinging her bag over her shoulder. She dashed down the hallway to the front door where Kara was waiting, arms crossed over her chest.
Kara sighed and passed Aru a wrapped sandwich in her hand, "Eat while we get there. You're gonna be hungry and I don't want you complaining when we get to school."
"How late are we?" asked Aru, grabbing the sandwich.
"It's almost break," said Kara, looking at her phone, dissatisfied.
"Crap," whispered Aru under her breath. "Do mama and dad know?"
"How else do you think we were both able to sleep in?" questioned Kara.
"You did too?" asked Aru incredulously.
Kara nodded, "When I was up, mom and dad both weren't here,"
"So where are they?" asked Aru, taking a bite out of her sandwich.
"Mom's down in the lobby but I don't know where dad is," responded Kara, opening the front door of their apartment.
Aru begrudgingly followed her sister's lead, locked the apartment door behind her and looked around. The hallway that connected the museum and the Shah family apartment was strictly prohibited to visitors and Aru saw it as one of the most majestic places in the museum.
The hallway ceiling was lined with marigold garlands and was filled with statues of all sorts, acting like a storage room if anyone got through the front door.
Aru and Kara stepped over a boxed picture frame, passing the statue of Sri Krishna which Aru saw daily without fail. The statue always seemed to be casting a scolding at her, as if it always knew what she was thinking.
Aru glanced at the statue's hand which was by his mouth, as if he was playing the flute but Aru had stolen the flute long ago and hid it under her bed when she was 8 for no apparent reason.
"Let's go, Aru," urged her sister.
"What's gotten into you?" asked Aru, looking at Kara pointedly.
"What do you mean?" asked Kara
"You never make us rush to school, even when we're late so something happened," explained Aru, examining her nails. She looked back up at her sister, "Spill."
"I need to see someone," blurted Kara immediately.
Aru's frown turned into a smile, "Who? What's their name? Is it a guy? Kara do you like someone?"
"Stop acting like mom!" whined Kara, pressing her hands to her red face.
"So it is a guy," said Aru, smirking.
"He's in my math class," said Kara quietly, she quickly changed her tone of voice and cleared her throat. "And I'm supposed to meet him at break to finish our maths project so we need to go."
"Anything for my lovestruck sister," said Aru.
Kara smirked, "What about you and Aiden, huh?"
"Don't talk about things that won't ever happen," said Aru icily.
Kara looked a bit dumbstruck as Aru walked out of the hall and into the museum.
Did she feel bad? Yes.
But did she want to look cool? Also yes.
Aru opened the big doors that vividly said "NO VISITORS ALLOWED". She loved opening those doors because it brought her a great feeling of breaking rules, unlike her sister who loved rules very much.
