After about 15 minutes of aimlessly exploring what hopefully was not the "new S.H.I.E.L.D." I stepped back outside the dam to see Sam descending from the sky. My mouth dropped wide open seeing him return with the most amazing thing I had ever seen.
I turned around to face Steve, who had stepped out behind me to see Sam. With a wide smile on my face, I pushed him in the chest lightly, "No way!"
The corner of Steve's mouth turned up as he looked down at me, "If you're gonna fight a war, you gotta wear a uniform."
Sam finally landed, raising his right arm high up to show off the gorgeous, authentic Captain America suit he had brought back. I jogged up to him, immediately running my hands along the smooth fabric of the suit. I savored this moment as best I could.
Upon Maria's orders, I changed into a tight, black, sleeveless jumpsuit. It had a high neck and a small zipper at the top which I unzipped just enough to look good while saving the world. I fastened a utility belt around my waist and looked at myself in the mirror. It wasn't the usual uniform I wore but I loved it.
I climbed into the van where everyone waited and sat in the last open seat next to Steve. My eyes scanned his suit and how well it fit him. He removed his mask and his hair had become slightly messy from it. This was the moment I decided this was Steve's most attractive look.
"New look?" Steve whispered in my ear.
I nodded and looked up at him, trying to read his expression. My eyes followed his, watching as he observed my new uniform.
"It looks good," he said with a nod.
"Unfortunately, I can't say the same for you. I'm more of a seven-pointed stars girl," I teased making my thick Australian accent even stronger to carry the joke. I received a smile and eye roll from Steve in return.
As the van finally pulled out of the dam and headed to the Triskeleon, Steve began to debrief us. He and Sam were going to insert the three chips into the carriers.
Natasha was going to use facial software to change her face into the council woman and infiltrate the Council meeting, keeping an eye on Pierce while gaining access to a high level computer. If she could, she was to dump all of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s secrets on to the internet, and essentially, HYDRA's secrets as well.
From inside the building, Maria would monitor the status of Project Insight and grant us with frequent updates.
My part of the plan, though I refused to let it show, scared me a lot. It was something I had done once, not on purpose, that haunted me for life.
"Addy, if we fail to switch the chips, we need to you burn the carriers. Create a large energy matter to destroy them quickly, before they have the chance to shoot anyone," Steve's words rang through my ears.
A light source as large as the carriers was extremely hard to control, I had never been able to do it. I watched as everyone in the van shared uneasy glances, knowing I had the power to either successfully destroy the carriers, or take the entire place down.
"Can you do that?" Asked Sam, noticing my hesitation.
"Uh, yeah," I said in attempt to sound confident.
"Uh?" Repeated Natasha who raised an eyebrow.
"How hard can it be?" I shrugged, waving away everyone's concerns except for Steve's.
He took my trembling hand in his own. Nervously, I met his comforting crystal blue eyes.
He spoke to me softly, "You've been trained well enough to complete high-threat missions every week and come back unharmed. This is only a little different. I know there was something that happened before, and even though I don't know what it was, I know you're stronger now because of it. With your abilities, brains, and fighting capability, I have immense faith in you, Ads."
