------------MAHIR'S POV
[ Mumbai, India]
I stood by the window of my office, staring out at the city below, trying to steady my racing heart, clutching my phone which has her number glowing on the screen.
I sighed, running a hand through my hair , How had I let her go? How had I been so blind, so stubborn?
I knew the answer. Selfishness . Stupidity. I had pushed her away, hurt her in ways I couldn't forgive myself for. And now, after all these years, I was standing alone in my office.
In those 4 years, I thought I had buried my feelings, I had convinced myself that I had moved on. Because she doesn't deserve someone like me , someone selfish like me , someone who drowned himself in the alcohol, someone who didn't understand her when she tried her best , someone who broke promises.
But then the moment my eyes had found her in the crowd again , one week ago in London , its like time had stopped. Every suppressed emotion, every unspoken word, had come crashing back with a force that left me breathless. I realised that I yearn for her and the love is still there, as strong as ever.
With a deep breath, I pressed the call button. The phone rang, each second stretching into an eternity.
Then, a familiar voice answered, sending a shiver down my spine, "Hello?"
"Elena," I said, my voice hoarse and deeper than usual.
FLASHBACK
[ St. John's Boarding School, Mumbai]
It was the last match of our high school year , after some months there would be our 12th board exams and we would get free from here .
The stadium was buzzing with energy, the roar of the crowd echoing in my ears as my teammates lifted me onto their shoulders. My team had won the inter college basketball match , but all I could think about was Elina. She had been attending all the games for me , ever since we had been in a relationship.
I scanned the crowd one last time, hoping to catch a glimpse of her, but she was nowhere to be found. As soon as the initial celebration died down, I made my escape. My phone buzzed with messages from friends inviting me to the celebration , but I couldn't care less because my focus was somewhere else .
She was supposed to be attending the match , But since morning she didn't picked up a single call , nor replied to the texts and my heart pounded with worry as I headed straight to her dorm room. When I reached there huffing as the dorm at on the otherside of the ground , I knocked softly, and a moment later, a tired but familiar voice called out, "Come in."
I pushed the door open and found her lying in bed, looking pale but managing a weak smile. "Hey, champ," she said, her voice raspy. "I heard you won."
" Fuck it ! Where have you been darling ! " I replied, dropping my bag and sitting beside her on the bed , " and what happened to you? Why didn't you come? Where's your phone ? "
