Chapter Two: Two Lines

It was two months after their awkward night and things finally started to feel a bit more bearable between Tim and Lucy. She didn't know if they'd ever be able to have a "normal" again, but at least now they were able to hold small conversations.

Benson was caught and back in jail and the station had returned to its normal pace.

It was early morning when Lucy shot out of bed and ran to the toilet, sweating and throwing up.
She's felt queasy for the past two weeks and it's seemed to peak these past few days. She thought at first it was something she ate, but a paralyzing fear soon took a place in the pit of her stomach. She was a week, maybe more, late, but she hadn't thought much of it due to the stress of Branson being out and about. What if it's more?

The time couldn't go any slower, she was pacing back and forth shooting down looks at the timer on her phone as she waited for those two minutes to pass since she peed on the stick. Catastrophising thoughts kept running and looping in her brain, making her even more nauseous. These are the longest two minutes of my life, she thought, exasperated.
The alarm went off and she found herself not being able to look down at the test. Too scared of what it might say, but knowing deep down it was probably not going to be the best.

She froze. And for a second she felt joy at the result - she'd always wanted to be a mother - until her world came crashing down around her.

Two pink lines.

She was pregnant.

And Tim was the father.

She didn't know what to do and her heart dropped into her stomach. This is not how this was supposed to go.

Tim had noticed the air around Lucy had seemed to shift, something was bothering her, but he couldn't tell what.
She wasn't her usual put together self. Her usual sharp pressed suit had some wrinkles, her bun was a bit messy, and her face was pale. Reservation written all over her face.
His heart twinged at the thought that she was going through difficulty and not being able to confide in her.
He knew he wasn't much of a 'personal life' talker but during their relationship they had gotten so close, and Lucy was the only person who could read him without even needing words to understand his thoughts and feelings. She knew him better than he knew himself. But he knew he didn't deserve her, not yet. She needed better. Someone who could give her everything she needs and wants. And maybe he could be that... He had made a lot of progress in therapy, but he was scared he'd hurt her too much.

This was a particularly bad morning for Lucy. She had woken up incredibly sick and was exhausted from vomiting the whole night. She was 13 weeks now and you couldn't tell she was pregnant, at most she maybe just looked bloated.

The briefing room was humming with chatter before sergeant Grey walked in with an "Okay, settle down everybody" as he took up his place in the front of the room.

Lucy was still caught in her thoughts when Grey said her name.

He looked at her expectantly, "Officer Chen, is that good?" he repeated himself, "You're riding with Seargent Bradford today"

She shot upright, flustered, for a moment looking like a deer in headlights, "Y-yes sir", she said with more of a high pitched tone than she intended.

She had ultimately decided this morning that she wasn't going to tell Tim, yet. Or maybe not at all... She didn't know. She was overwhelmed. The fear of rejection was all too consuming and the fear of Tim feeling a sense of obligation was even worse.

But now she has to ride in the shop with him... The whole day... She didn't know if she could do that. And to make matters worse, she was suffering from really bad morning sickness. Heck, she didn't even know why morning was in that term... It was more like 24-hour sickness. Her face paled further as she could feel another wave of nausea washing over her. She grasped onto the desk, riding the wave until it settled enough for her to rise and make her way to the locker room.
