Chapter 23: Broken

Deku's POV:

"Izuku, you know we love you but if you sigh one more time, I'm going to lose it." I look up from the hero and villain notes I was taking based on the news and look over at Shoto, pouting at his statement.

   My mom walks over to me, sitting down beside me with a worried look on her face. "Izuku, when was the last time you went out? Ever since we found each other again, you've done nothing but train and come back here. It can't be healthy to be inside all day. You need to go out for a change.."

"I can't do that, I can't leave you here with these crazy people.." My mom chuckles and all my friends look at me in annoyance. "Kidding.."

   A sigh escapes my mom and she makes me stand up, gently starting to push me out the door. "I don't want you sighing away all your energy here! You need to go out for a change and get some sunlight, go on and do something different!"

   I look around at my friends, hoping one of them will save me but they were clearly all siding with my mom due to my comment. Traitors. My gaze falls to Tomura, knowing he was the last person who would agree to go outside. "I'll go if Tenko goes..!"

   His eyes widen when I call him by his real name. Everyone looks at him, knowing he would never agree. Just as I think I'm safe, my friends start to push him out the door as well. "Are you kidding me?! I'm not going..! I'll decay you all, I swear-!"

"Tenko, don't you dare threaten your friends..!" My mom steps in and crosses her arms with an upset look on her face. One look at my mom and Tomura begrudgingly starts to walk out of the door himself. I'm surprised by how obedient he is with my mom.

   Unable to find any other excuse to protest, I put on my jacket and grab two black face masks for us before leaving with him to get some fresh air. The bitter winter cold makes us both shiver as we take off our face masks once we were far enough away, snow falling lightly as we walk further from the League.

   Neither of us knew where we were going, and we had no destination, but we continued to walk anyway. A sigh escapes me and I can see my breath create a fog. "I'm- sorry for calling you Tenko earlier without permission.. Even if everyone knows that's your name, I'm sorry.."

   My adoptive brother stays silent for a long time before slowly speaking up. "I don't mind if you and your mom call me that.." I'm surprised and I look up at him, noticing the calm expression he wore. "You're kinda like family now, thanks to father adopting me, so.."

   I smile softly at that, putting my hands in my pockets to preserve the warmth. "You know.. since you were adopted into our family, it kinda makes her your mom, too.." Tenko meets my gaze with a slight scoff, but he smiles anyway.

"Yeah, I guess so.. you're not going to get jealous if I start calling her mom, are ya?" I chuckle at the thought of us actually acting like a family despite all the chaos around us. The idea of it made me feel more a human and less a monster.

"I won't. She's your mom now, Tenko. It's like I said, you're also family now." There's a long moment of silence after that. Unlike before, it was much more comfortable this time. It felt like we had grown a little closer compared to before.

   We stay clear of the busier streets, not wanting to draw much attention to ourselves. Tenko used to be so much taller than me when we first met but we were about the same height now. In fact, I might be a little taller.

   The crisp cold air served to help clear our thoughts. Amidst the chaos going on, trying to take down my father, it was becoming harder and harder to remember how to breathe.

"Your mom is just like my mom was, you know.." I meet Tenko's gaze for a moment. He gently kicks the snow as he continues to speak. "The only difference is that your mom doesn't allow conflict to happen. If any of us argue, she'll levitate us in the air upside down until we apologize and make up. She's just like you, stubborn but kind.."
