Forty-six: Not Taking It

!!!

Y/n sat slouched in a chair in the Wheeler's basement, arms folded and eyes glued to her girlfriend as her leg bounced rapidly. Max sat at a desk, writing something. She had been doing that since they got there, moving to grab a new piece of paper every so often. Steve sighed before speaking, his voice something Y/n quickly tuned out.

"Y/n!"

The girl in question startled out of her daze, her eyes snapping to Steve when the boy shouted.

"I said, what do you think?"

"Oh, uh, I don't know," she shrugged mindlessly, her eyes finding their ways back to her Max as she reached her hand up. She bit her nails nervously as the three boys looked between each other incredulously. Dustin turned to the girl, his eyes narrowed. "You don't know?" He asked, Steve adding on. "You haven't even picked up the newspaper."

They were supposed to be looking through different newspaper articles that Nancy and Robin had acquired, and the boys did the job. Y/n, however, started to read but tossed the paper onto a desk around thirty seconds in so she could focus on worriedly eyeing her redheaded girlfriend. Max hadn't said a word since she revealed the fact that she was Vecna's next victim, not even to Y/n. She didn't avoid the girl, still holding her hand and resting her head on her shoulder, but she never spoke. When they got to the Wheeler's and Max immediately sat down, Y/n could tell that she wanted space, and reluctantly gave her some.

Y/n shrugged in response, speaking through her teeth as she continued to gnaw at her nails. "Yeah, well," she let her words hang. Dustin followed her gaze to look at Max, eventually speaking. "Any idea what she's writing?"

No one replied, Y/n remaining in her slouched position, chewing her nails and tapping her foot with one arm crossed. Steve and Lucas followed Dustin's gaze, everyone now staring deeply into the back of Max's head, as if looking away would make her suddenly disappear, falling victim to Vecna. "Did she sleep?" Dustin asked, getting a response this time from Lucas. "I mean, would you?"

They heard a loud slam, making everyone's line of sight move to the basement door that had swung open. Y/n spared it a brief glance before her eyes darted back to Max. Nancy and Robin descended down the stairs, making Max turn around. Y/n continued to watch her girlfriend, and Max, feeling the eyes on her, looked to Y/n.

Y/n gave a quizzical look, as if asking what Max was doing. The redhead got the idea, turning before grabbing something and moving back to face Y/n. She showed her girlfriend the envelopes in her hand, further confusing the girl, but she nodded regardless, turning her attention to the older girls in front of her and tuning back in to the conversation.

Nancy handed Steve a folder, and Robin handed one to Dustin before she began to explain, the two girls sitting down. "Thanks to Nancy's newspaper minions, we are now rock-star psychology students at the University of Notre Dame," she told.

"I'm now Ruth," Nancy revealed, Robin adding on with her new identity. "And I'm Rose."

Steve looked up at Nancy humorously. "Ruth?" He repeated, Nancy giving a look as she cocked her head in response. Dustin looked up from the paper with wide eyes. "Nice GPA," he complimented. Nancy gave a smile. "Thanks."

Nancy continued the explanation of their plan. "So we called Pennhurst Asylum, told then we'd like to speak with Victor Creel for a thesis we're co-writing on paranoid schizophrenics--" she was cut off by Robin. "To which they said no," she stated, Nancy resuming after. "But, we landed a three o'clock with the director," the Wheeler shared as the boys passed the files between each other.
