Fifty: The Lights

!!!

The light their eyes had been trained on suddenly went out, but soon another light turned on. One in another room.

Y/n noticed it first, tapping Max's stomach to get her attention. They shared glances at each other before following it, only for it to shut off and another one to flicker on. They silently followed after it as well, then another, and another, and another.

"Go get the others," Max quietly told her girlfriend, tapping her arm. Y/n gave an unsure expression, not wanting to leave the girl alone, but eventually hurried to find her friends.

Once they had all gathered together, they stood looking up at a chandelier, which pulsed with light.

"It's like the Christmas lights," Nancy breathed, and Y/n instantly knew what she was talking about. Robin leaned closer to Nancy as she spoke. "The Christmas lights?" She repeated in a whisper, confused. It occurred to Y/n just then that they had never told Robin about the lights used to contact Will three years prior. Maybe Lucas told Max, but Y/n wasn't sure of that either.

"Yeah, when… when Will was in the Upside Down, the lights… came to life," Nancy explained.

"Vecna's here. In this house," Lucas concluded, causing a shiver to run down Y/n's spine. If Vecna was there, that means he could hear them. Possibly see them, too, but based on their previous experiences, she knew he could hear them.

"Just on the other side," the boy added. At those words, the lights flickered more sporadically before going out. The absence of the light's buzz left them in silence.

"I think he just left the room," Robin shared.

From beside Y/n, Max glanced around. "Did he hear us?" She asked, informing Y/n that the redhead wasn't aware of the answer, and probably not about the Christmas lights before then. She wondered what else Lucas left out of his explanation two years before.

"Can he see us?" Steve asked, adding onto Max's question.

"He can hear us," Y/n notified, nodding. She looked away from the unlit chandelier when she felt eyes on her. She looked around at her friends. "I- I don't know about the seeing part, but… he can hear us."

The words left them in silence, everyone aware of the fact that they were being listened to.

Y/n looked to Max behind her. "Put your headphones on," she ordered, and her girlfriend quickly complied.

"Wait. Wait," Nancy spoke, catching everyone's attention. "Everyone, turn off your flashlights and spread out," she said before walking off, her light now off. No one but Steve questioned it, Y/n taking her girlfriend's hand and walking off as the boy spoke. "We're not gonna be able to see if we turn off our flash… lights."

"Jesus Christ," he whispered as he shut off his light.

!!!

Y/n's head shot in the direction of Robin's voice when she heard her shout.

"I got him! Got him! I got him!"

Y/n grabbed Max's hand -- which had been removed from hers when they entered the room -- before taking off in Robin's direction, but as they approached the girl in question, they saw her flashlight dimming until it went out completely. The older girl brought it down from where she was holding it. "I- I… I had him."
