Forty-eight: Freddy Krueger

!!!

"Y/n!"

Y/n groaned when Nancy shoved her shoulder. "Wake up!" The older girl shouted, and Y/n's eyes slowly opened. "What?" She asked groggily. "What time is it?" She looked around, gathering her surroundings. The girl froze, her eyes widening as she realized the absence of her girlfriend. The redhead was once under Y/n's arm, the couple's legs entangled as Y/n forced herself to stay awake. But apparently, she failed and fell asleep.

"Aren't you supposed to be on Max watch?" Nancy recalled, but Y/n ignored her, shooting up from her seat and scrambling to the stairs, Nancy soon following.

Y/n's sprinting abruptly stopped when her eyes landed on a familiar head of red hair, its owner sitting at the table as she colored something. Y/n immediately eased at the sight, and the guilt from falling asleep took over, her shoulders deflating as her face fell.

"Morning, guys," Mrs. Wheeler greeted from the kitchen. "Everything okay?"

Y/n paid no mind to the woman, moving to sit by her girlfriend as Nancy spoke behind her. Max looked to Y/n, offering a small smile. Y/n immediately reciprocated it, listening to the sound of Kate Bush's voice through Max's headphones as the redhead took them off. "Hey."

"Hey," Y/n returned, staring into the girl's icy blue eyes. "I shouldn't have fallen asleep, I'm so fucking sorry," she apologized, making Max shake her head with a light chuckle. "Don't be, it's fine."

The two looked over at Nancy as she sat down, Nancy looking to Max. "Hey. You okay?" She asked, making Max shrugged a bit. "Just couldn't sleep," she told. "People kept blasting music in my ears for some reason."

Nancy gave a breathy chuckle, and Max added on. "But Holly let me borrow some of her crayons," she informed the two, smiling fondly at the girl in question. "We've been having a fun morning, right Holly?"

"Mm-hmm."

Seeing Max interact with young children like Holly never failed to warm Y/n's heart. The redhead had a soft spot for kids.

Nancy and Y/n moved their gazes to Max's drawings, seeing what seemed like broken pieces of wood, the background of the drawings being red.

"Is this what you saw last night?" Nancy asked, looking to Max, who shrugged slightly. "I mean, it's supposed to be. I thought it'd be easier to draw it out than to explain it, but… not so much."

Y/n caught sight of a particular drawing. There were what looked like spikes emerging from the ground, two broken bodies attached to them. It was Fred and Chrissy, no doubt about it. It sent chills down Y/n's spine. That's what almost happened to Max. That's what almost happened while Y/n stood there, helpless. A knot formed in her stomach.

Nancy saw Y/n's expression and followed the girl's gaze to the drawing, reaching out and moving it towards her a bit. "Is that…" Nancy trailed off, Max answering the unfinished question. "It was like they were on display or something," she explained. "And then there was this red fog everywhere," the girl added, gesturing to every drawing. "It was like a dream. A nightmare."

"Do you think Vecna's just trying to scare you?" Nancy asked.

"With Billy, yeah," Max nodded. She had told them that he used Billy against her. That he had made her see him. "But when I made it here… I don't know, something was different," she explained. "He seemed surprised, almost. Like he didn't want me there."

"Maybe you infiltrated his mind," Dustin suggested, the boy having sat down with his plate of many pancakes stacked upon each other. "He invaded your mind, right? Is it that big of a leap to suggest you somehow wound up in his?" Then the boy's face dawned as an idea clicked. "Like Freddy Krueger's boiler room!"

"Freddy Krueger?" Holly repeated the name new to her, her face scrunched up in confusion.

"He's this super burned up dude with razors for fingers," Dustin explained. Y/n's eyes widened as he did, shooting daggers as him, but he didn't notice. The boy continued. "And he kills you in your dreams--"

"Dustin, seriously?" Nancy stopped him, and he finally realized that he probably shouldn't be scaring a six year old like this. "Sorry," he apologized to the blonde. "It's a movie, It's not real."

"Jesus, Dustin," Y/n breathed, getting up and moving to Holly. "Hey, Holls, you wanna go play in your room? We don't wanna disrupt you," she said, her tone a lot softer as she spoke to the girl. Holly nodded, unplugging her Lite Brite and heading up the stairs with it.

Dustin turned back to his friends. "Just… think about it. What if you somehow unlocked a back door to Vecna's world?" He theorized. "Like, maybe the answer we're looking for is…" he turned a paper towards him. "Somewhere in this… incredibly vague drawing. God, we need Will."

"Hey, I think her drawings are good." Y/n snatched the paper from Dustin, earning a small smile from her girlfriend.

"I tried them again this morning, and it's the same busy signal," Max informed them while Nancy looked at a drawing. Something about it apparently caught her eye, and she picked the paper up. "Is this a window?" She asked, her expression showing that something was coming together.

"Yeah."

"Stained glass with roses."

"Yeah," Max nodded, then looked to Dustin. "See? I'm not so terrible after all," she told him, and Dustin sneered.

"Yeah, well, it helps that I've seen it before," Nancy breathed, grabbing for more papers, making Y/n furrow her brows. She folded and moved each paper, then outlined it and added details with Sharpie, and everything came together to form a house.

"It's pieces of a house," Max pointed out.

"Not just any house," Nancy said, then added the door. "It's Victor Creel's house."

She stood from her seat, and everyone looked up at her, Dustin's speaking first. "Where are you going?" He asked, his voice muffled by the mouthful of pancakes he had. Y/n stood as well, reaching over and grabbing the last two pancakes from Dustin's plate. She took Max's hand and hurried as she followed Nancy, handing her girlfriend a pancake as they made their way down the stairs.
