Chapter 8: What We Lost

A year ago, the Death and Funeral of Spider-Man shocked the world. The webslinger died after a long battle against Onaga the Dragon King and both were seemingly destroyed. Steve Rogers who was on a mission with the other when the attacked happened. He received calls from Y/N but ignored it as he was fed up with him and was it was heartbreaking to see a person he respected lose his principals, and fall deeper into the darkness. Once the heroes returned home, the news confronted them about Y/N's death which caused great grief among the heroes. Even he was in tears, because despite the recent event that happened between them, he'd still counted him as a great man, a good friend and a good hero...

The funeral was held the very next day, with all the heroes, even the ones who had recent disagreements with Y/N showed up even the mutants showed up. The church that the funeral was packed along with the outside, all paying their respects to the person who saved the city countless times. SHIELD offered to take care of security but NYPD declined. Y/N's mother, M/N was in the front row sobbing. Y/N's family only recently learned that Y/N was Spider-Man, just before they disowned him. Y/N's father, F/N, was rubbing her back with tears leaking out from his eyes. Y/N brother and sister, B/N and S/N were beside them grieving. Behind them was Y/N's ex-girlfriend, Felica Hardy, sat there stoned faced. Beside her was Y/N's many exes with tears going down their faces all while Wanda was trying her hardest to not lose control of her magic and destroy everything including the heroes in grief. The Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, the Inhumans Royal Family, the Defenders, the Order of the Web, and several more famous heroes sat behind them. The audience were on edge as Rhino entered but put his hands up, no wanting trouble.

Rhino: I only here to pay my respects.

Rhino told them how Y/N helped him move on from the pain of his wife's death, which he was forever grateful for. After, thinking it over, Yuri allowed it and also promised that he'll not be arrested today, despite many of the heroes' objections. Shortly after, more of Y/N's villains showed from Kingpin, Mysterio, Electro, Scorpion, Kraven, Vulture, Norman, Sandman, Mister Negative, to some of Y/N's least known villains, Sylde and Stilt Man. Later, even some of Y/N's none villains shown up, Red Skull, Taskmaster, Viper, Magneto, Doctor Doom and Zemo. None of them, had action taken against them. That was when the last villain showed up, Doctor Otto Octavius.

Yuri: Octavius? Aren't you dead?

Yuri's face turned to rage.

Yuri: How dare you show your face here, after the bullshit you pulled!

Yuri was about to charge at him to rip his head off but Tony stopped her.

Tony: Uh, detective, I don't understand why you're everyone else, but not him.

Yuri: I thought you were a genius Stark, he swapped minds with Y/N, leaving him in his dying body, while Otto was in Y/N's healthy body, and pretended to be a hero! But once he couldn't take it anymore, he left Y/N to pick up the pieces!

Tony: That's-

Otto: True.

That silence the entire crowd.

Susan: Wait, so all that Superior Spider-Man stuff...

Otto: That was me. And just because we fought, doesn't mean I did not respect him, detective.

He turned to the coffin with remorse on his face.

Otto: Good luck, L/N. May your next life be better and more peaceful than this one.

Otto then leaves while everyone was getting the bearing together. After that, more sheds were shred as Y/N's villains recounted their time fighting the young webslinger. Several broke doing the stories as some closed their eyes in grief. They did not know what was going to happen next, all they knew is that New York lost their best defender.

After the funeral, the heroes wanted to bury Y/N in New York but the people of Symkaria wanted the would have been king to be buried next to their queen, Silver Sable and so they did. Y/N's coffin was buried next to Silver Sable both resting together.

That's when it happened, there was one week of silence after the funeral. Not a single crime was committed, no one was hurt, robbed, or killed. The entire city paid respect to the man who saved it time and time again.

After that, crime rose drastically. The petty criminals, those who were nowhere near classed as a dangerous threat started acting out more without New York's guardian all while the super villains all rose up to take over New York.

The other Spiders in the city did little to stop them as they were all easily defeated. Every time they confront the criminals and villains, they would have to fall back so they can live. The Defenders whose job was to watch the streets, found themselves outmatched by the criminals and villains of New York as they always faced Y/N and would have to upgrade their stuff to even hurt Y/N and because of that the Defenders were outmatched. Slowly New York begins to fall to the criminals and villains. Earth's Mightiest Heroes were even struggling against the villains that Y/N has put away many times in the past. Not only did they have to deal with the villains but also the criminals. Choosing to cut their loses, the heroes retreated out of New York, as it became a warzone as SHIELD begin holding the cities that has not been fallen to the criminals and villains yet and set up bases there. During the chaos, more villains broke up such as Carnage who begin to tear the heroes apart. Arriving at Washington DC, the heroes begin to regroup and regather themselves, mostly all injured and broken during the fight as some still have not recovered from the death of Y/N. Carol, Wanda, Susan, Silk and Natasha took it especially hard. They'd broke down completely after the funeral and were never the same again. Tony had retreated into his drinks, Thor and Hulk were angry beyond belief. Hell, even Steve Rogers was angry.

The Fantastic Four refused to help or fight, with Susan and the kids still grieving over the loss of Y/N, their friend and uncle while Johnny joined Logan and Bobby at the bars. Reed had locked himself in his lab to grief, Ben was the only one who wanted to protect people in honour of Y/N.

The X-Men were secluded on Krakoa, but Steve convinced them and the Inhumans to come and help take back New York.

The Defenders were completely broken as they could barely do anything without breaking down and bursting into tears.

At the base, Steve hair was a complete mess. He then hears someone come in, it was Julia, the Madame Web.

Julia: Hello, Rogers. Did you hear?

Steve: The news? I did. The Sinister War is what they are calling it on the papers.

Julia: Osborn and Octavius are starting to attack each other. The city is now in a civil war. And unlike ours, they will not care about the civilians or how many lives are lost. They are going to destroy New York.

Steve: How did he do it? How did one man, with nothing but a suit and web shooters manage to hold the city together without any of us knowing?

Julia: Y/N was a gatekeeper. He held back the villains and criminals for years. How many times did his love ones berate him for being irresponsible or tell him he was a nuisance? Now the world is seeing the full force of evil Y/N has held at bay. And just imagine, he fought them for nearly fifteen years.

Steve: Well, I don't know what to do, Julia. We've lost the city, we've lost the trust of the people, we've lost lives, we've lost everything we fought for! Hell, so many of us are to injured to get up and keep fighting! I never thought I'd say this, but I'M NOT SPIDER-MAN! I don't have the will to get up and keep fighting a losing battle. I just can't and I can't ask my friends to go out there and die for no reason.

Julia: What if I told you... Y/N L/N isn't dead.

Steve instantly looked up.

Steve: Go on...

Unaware to them, Franklin and Valeria heard this.
