L's POV

The cold winds and heavy rain hit my visor in aggressive gusts, but I didn't mind. In fact, I could barely focus on the winds due to the little birds hopping around at my feet.

I giggled as they curiously pecked at my shoes and pants. "H-hey! That tickles- haha!" A crow squawked and nuzzled into my, not-normally-wet suit. "You're so adorable!" The curious crow just kept nuzzling into my suit, eventually hopping up on my lap.

I couldn't contain the cuteness any longer, gently petting the bird and squealing as it pecked at my palm. "My hands aren't food, silly!" I couldn't stop laughing and kicking my feet. Birds are just so adorable! The way they hop instead of walk, their little beaks, their curious eyes, and the way their heads tilt at their curiosity, the list just goes on and on!

"L! L!" I couldn't tell who was calling me, I just continued playing with the little birds. "L?" I felt a tap on my shoulder and I finally acknowledged the person. "N? What are you doing out here?"

"I came to bring you inside! Tessa's folks aren't mad anymore, Tessa talked to them." I looked at him curiously before remembering why I was out here in the first place.

FLASHBACK (2 hours prior)

"That thing is just like her! He's a nuisance, a waste of space! All he does is stand there and flap his arms like a needy child!"

"He's not a nuisance, mother! He has feelings too!"

"What has he done useful around here?"

"He's... he's helped me clean up after coloring! He's... uh... helped me clean my room! He's really good at-"

"Oh, poppycock. I don't want to hear anything more. Go to your room and don't come out until I say so!"

"But!-"

"ENOUGH!"

I watched quietly as Tessa walked away. She spared me one last glance before disappearing up a staircase.

"As for you, I think you deserve some time outside. Maybe that'll knock some sense into you and you'll finally start chipping in. I thought that little brat Cyn was enough, but you too... goodness... will I ever catch a break?"

Tessa's mother grabbed my arm and started leading me to the back door.

"Let's go."

...

END OF FLASHBACK

"L? Ya there buddy?" I looked up and nodded. "Yes, sorry." N smiled down at me. "It's okay, let's get inside before this rain freezes your circuits." I shook my head slightly with a smile. "I'm okay, N! Really! These crows can keep me company out here until sunrise! Did you know crows are extremely smart? They hold grudges! These birds can remember every face they've ever seen and detect if they were a threat to them once in their life. Isn't that incredible? Oh! And, they have excellent sight too! They can see up to 1.5 miles in the daylight! 1.5 MILES, N! That's insane! And, unlike other birds, crows are-"

"Listen... L... I know how much you love crows... but... I'm worried about you. Look, how about we make a deal? You can tell me all about crows inside! We can make a little fort with blankets and pillows and draw and read about crows in the library. Would that be okay? I just don't want you freezing out here and not being able to see another crow because your systems malfunctioned.

I looked sadly at the birds one more time before slowly grabbing N's extended hand. "Okay."

...

N's POV

"Look, look! There are so many crows!" I nodded and laughed. It made me happy seeing L so happy about crows. I watched them flap their hands in the air excitedly as they looked at a picture book filled with crows of all different sizes and colors.

"Hey, wait. That doesn't look like a crow?" I pointed to a picture of a white bird on one of the pages.

L ran a hand through his hair before looking at the page closely, his eyes scanning the words before widening with surprise and excitement. "N! THERE ARE ALBINO CROWS?! THAT'S SO COOL!"

"What's an Albino Crow?" I asked and smiled. "Albinism is the result of cells that can't produce melanin! Melanin is the pigment needed to color everything on an animal. From the eyes to the skin, the scales, or the hair! This crow is albino, meaning, he doesn't have color! I had no clue they even existed! This is incredible! He grinned.

I nodded. "I had no idea animals could be colorless like that," I admitted. "Crows are a mystery." He smiled, flipping through the pages while simultaneously playing with the hem of his suit.

"Hey, have you ever talked about crows with Cyn? I'm sure she'd love to hear." He shrugged. "I do sometimes. She's hard to find. When she isn't in the basement, I have no clue where she is." I looked away. "Well, I'm glad you're still trying." He smiled, his eyes still on the book.

"Hey, L?"

"Yes, N?" He looked up from the page.

"If you don't mind me asking... Why aren't you in the main lobby ever? I never see you in the dining hall or the lobby, I was just curious if there was a specific reason."

"Oh, overstimulation. Whenever I'm in a place with many people I get sensory overloads. The talking of everyone around me becomes too much and my systems overheat. I like being in my own little bubble away from everyone." I nodded. "When you say overstimulation, what do you mean?"

"Uh... think of it like this. When I'm in a crowded room and everyone's talking, it sounds like they're all screaming in my ears. That's why when I first got here I was so unresponsive, I couldn't tell the voices apart. If someone is trying to get my attention I physically can't respond. I can't speak. My body won't let me. I just have to book it for an empty room and breathe deeply to relax."

"Why didn't you get overstimulated when you were outside earlier? Surely crows and the rain were loud and annoying."

"I don't know. The rain is strangely calming and the birds are my favorite thing. Maybe it's just a ton of voices." He shrugged, looking at the floor.

I nodded. "I think I'm getting it. I'm so sorry that happens to you, I wish I could make the noise go away, maybe then you'd enjoy talking and hanging out with other workers more."

"Nah, I'm okay. I like being by myself. Well, except for when I'm with you. You're... you're nice to me. You're my only friend in this mansion. You're like family. I've always seen you as an older brother to me..."

I smiled and wiped a holographic tear from my visor. "Oh, L... you're like my family too! I'm glad I get to hang out with you every day. I enjoy listening to you. You're a great friend."

He smiled sheepishly, a small blush coming onto his visor. "Can I... hug you?" I grinned and opened my arms. L gladly accepted the gesture and squeezed me in a tight hug.

"So, what should we do now?" I asked as we separated.

"Can we play Shoots and Ladders?"

"Is that even a question? YES!"
