CHAPTER 5
The next morning, I convinced Avi and Kevin that we had to go to Port Elizabeth. I couldn't just sit back and watch my ONLY potential boyfriend get taken away from me. (That's not what I told them.)
We took the first flight out and arrived early in PE.
I knocked on their hotel door anxiously. Mitch opened and we all rushed in and went towards Scott. The hotel looked a little untidy, but what was I expecting? With Mitch and Scott living in it, it had to be.
"Hey," I said, "we came fast as we could." I was dressed in a mid-thigh dress and flats, so I easily sat down next to him. K.O speaks. "We were worried when Mitch told us…"
"Thanks for coming," Scott says gratefully, "it means a lot to me."
I took the time to absorb his appearance. His hair was uncombed; his eyes had bags underneath them and his clothes looked like he'd been swallowed by a whale and it just spat him out. I felt like crying at the sight of my Scott looking so miserable.
At our arrival, Scott somehow cheered up - that's what Mitch told us. We were all sitting silently when Scott suddenly jumped up.
"I have a plan!" Scott shouted and we all looked at him in anticipation.
"All I can say is… get ready for a performance."
***
I never thought I'd find myself stuck in a school somewhere in Africa, about to perform for a crowd of students and educators. I walked towards the hall where we'd be performing while the boys went into the admin block.
Scott was shaking hands with the principal when I saw a pretty teenage girl walk into the office. She looked like the teacher's pet type of girl. I laughed as I remembered my high school days as every teacher's pet and every student's secret enemy. Scott said something to her and she blushed. I laughed faintly at the pretty and clearly romance-less girl.
I wasn't sure where the hall was, I just thought I was. I found myself at the rugby field where a class was having their gym period. A few heads turned as I walked up to the educator. A few boys drooled and I was glad I still had that effect on the male species.
The teacher sent one boy to walk me to the hall. The boy was a little too confident with himself. He asked me if I was a new educator because if so he was switching to whatever class I'd be teaching. I could tell from his appearance that he was a jock and the sensation around his mates. Not cool.
"I'm Kirstie," I said, "and I am not a teacher - just a singer."
"WHOA!" the boy shouted, "KIRSTIE AS IN PENTATONX's KIRSTIE? I KNEW YOU LOOKED FAMILIAR! My sister's a HUGE fan and I only like the hot girl in the group - wait that's you!!!!!"
I laughed at his rambling. He asked if he could take a picture with me and I agreed with no hesitations. I thanked him and went into the hall where I found Kevin, Mitch and Scott backstage.
"I saw her Kirstie!" Scott said excitedly. "Elsa, I saw her!" I smiled and tried my best to look excited for him. He was too love-struck to notice the fake in my smile, which I was grateful for.
Scott had a distant look in his eyes. I wasn't the only one who noticed because Mitch suddenly waved his hands in Scott's face.
"It's time buddy," K.O said and I heard Scott whisper, "For her… For Elsa."
At that moment, I envied her more than anything. She waltzed into our lives only five days ago and now we were doing a performance just for her. She was only sixteen or eighteen or something. Scott would get arrested for child molestation. I let all negative thoughts rest as I did what I loved.
The excitement among the students could be felt in the room.
"A one, a two, a one, two, three, four…" Kevin started. Avi joined in with his base and the three of us sang the first lines of Cruising for a Bruising. When we finished, the whole school, teachers included, applauded.
"GO SCOTT!" a girl from the audience shouted and I noticed it was the pretty girl from reception. Her hands were lifted high and it made me happy to think that we had managed to make her day.
