I followed quietly, stopping once in a while, so he didn't notice I was following him. I saw him walk into a wooden shack that looked like it would topple over at any second.
I grabbed the door knob, and that's when I heard another pained scream, causing me to flinch and step away. I sighed, bracing myself for whatever was on the other side. I walked in, almost missing the group of guys standing next to the staircase. At the front of the group was the guy who kept staring daggers at me from across the glade.
I cursed under my breath. and tried to sneak past them.
''Oh, look, a little birdie flew in'' a voice I didn't recognise spoke.
I turned and found them all looking at me. I pretended like I didn't hear them and kept walking. I barely managed not to trip when the boy who gave me a death stare stepped right in front of me.
He was tall, kind of muscular, and had black hair.
"Hold on there, Greenie." He jerked a thumb in the direction of the
upper floor. "Newbies aren't allowed to see someone who's been...
taken. Newt and Alby won't allow it."'' Well, what happens to me really isn't any of your business'' I replied keeping my calm, but i was getting really frustrated at how little these people were willing to tell me, and what does he mean by ''taken''?
"Listen to me, Greenbean." The boy wrinkled up his face and folded his arms. "I've seen you before. Something's fishy about you showing up here, and I'm going to find out what."
A surge of heat pulsed through my veins. "I've never seen you before in my life. I have no idea who you are, and I couldn't care less," I spat.
But really, how would he know? And how could this kid remember me?
"I've seen you, Shank. I've been through what Ben's going through.
'' I missed the part where I asked''
''I'm going up there whether you like it or not,'' I said, signalling at the second floor of the building.
The boy said nothing; he just stared at me for several seconds. Then he shook his head. "You know what? You're right, Greenie; I shouldn't be so mean to newbies. Go upstairs, and I'm sure Alby and Newt will fill you in. Seriously, go on. I'm sorry."
His personality changed as if a switch had been flipped. I started doubting the idea of going upstirs; what if it was dagerouse? This guy had made it very clear he hated me; what if this was his way of getting rid of me quickly?
I shook off my thoughts and slowly walked up the stairs. Before I was out of their sight, someone yelled from behind me, '' Have fun, birdie''. I rolled my eyes at the stupid name, but I didn't look back at them. I slowly ascended the stairs, my eyes kept darting to the uneven walls, expecting them to collapse any second taking me down with them.
A sigh of relief escaped my mouth when I finally reached the top. In front of me were about a dozen doors. I looked at the doors and spotted one with light coming out of it. I turned the brass handle and opened the door. Alby and Newt were inside, crouching over someone, which I guessed was Ben. I still couldn't see Ben because they were blocking my view. I moved to the other side of the door, trying to see what the fuss was about. I quickly covered my mouth with my hands to stop myself from making a sound.
A twisted, pale figure writhing in agony, chest-bare and hideous. Tight, rigid cords of sickly green veins webbed across the boy's body and limbs, like ropes under his skin. Purplish bruises covered the kid, as did red hives and bloody scratches. His bloodshot eyes bulged, darting back and forth. The image had already burned into my mind before Alby jumped up, blocking the view but not the moans and screams, pushing me out of the room, then slamming the door shut behind us.
