"Believe it or not, Shakespeare probably never intended his plays to be read by students sitting at desks, more concerned with getting A's than with the fate of Macbeth. His plays were meant to be experienced, lived." the teacher said. "So, with that in mind, together with my third-period Shakespeare, you will be split into five groups, and each group will assume responsibility for one act of 'Romeo and Juliet', which will be performed a week from Sunday." she said, handing the students some papers. "You will nominate the director, you will cast the scene, rehearse the scene, and interpret the scene in your own individual manner. Last year, we did 'Richard III'. One group did their scenea as the Mafiosi. Another set theirs during the Roman Empire. And my favorite, the climatic last scene was set during the final days of 'The Sonny and Cher Show'."
The students giggled. Y/N looked a little confused at Rory.
"Just remember, whatever interpretation you choose should highlight the themes you see in the scene." she continued.
The bell rang, but before the students left the classroom, the teacher said:
"And if the love of the Bard's language still doesn't inspire you, remember, this will be 50% of your final grade."
All of the students left, leaving Madeline, Louise, Paris and the two sisters.
"Act 5." Madeline said.
"Act 5." Louise added.
"Act 5?" Paris asked the two sisters.
"Act 5." Rory sighed.
"Me too." Y/N said.
"Why don't they just sew our sides together and rename us Chang and Aang?" Paris said sarcastically, getting up and leaving, followed by Madeline and Louise.
"This couldn't get any better." Rory said.
"I guess we already know who the director is." Y/N replied.
The two girls got up and left the classroom, but a boy stopped Rory.
"Rory..."
"Oh, Henry, hi!" she said, recognizing him.
"Hey." he smiled. "Act 3, sword fight. You?"
"Oh, act 5, death scene." she answered.
Y/N looked confused at them, as she wasn't recognizing the boy. Rory noticed that, and excused herself.
"Oh, I forgot, sorry. Henry, this is my sister, Y/N. Y/N, Henry." she said. "He is Lane's friend. We met him at Madeline's party."
"Oh, nice to meet you." Y/N smiled. "Lane's friend, huh? Must be hard for you."
"Oh, yeah, about that, tonight? Eight o'clock?" he asked Rory.
"I'll tell Lane." she replied.
"Rory, sorry to interrupt, but you see, we're all standing over there, trying to map out a game plan and rehearsal schedule." Paris said. "I'm sure whatever the two of you're talking about up here is so much more fascinating and important and- well, God, let's just say it- fun. But, I'd like to get an 'A' on this assignment and to do that, you're gonna have to discuss sock hops and clambakes some other time, okay? Thanks." she added and left.
"That was scary." Henry affirmed.
"It's gonna be a lot scarier once she gets a megaphone in her hands." Rory answered.
