Chapter 9

Dear Atlas,

I think I'm about to have the best summer ever. Wanna know why? Because TRISTIAN ASKED ME OUT! Fiiinaaalllyyyy!!! I mean, yeah, school's over next week, but I wouldn't mind having my first-ever summer fling hehe!

I told Chiron, and he seemed happy for me. Maybe I should find him his own little seasonal romance so we can have double dates?? I'll have to ask what he thinks. Knowing him, he'll just stare at me like I'm some imbecile, haha!

Love always, Rosie (May 18th, 2012)

Dear Atlas,

It's our summer break, and I'm currently hanging out with Chiron by our pool. He's helping my mom make hot dogs and keeps throwing me weird looks. So what did I do? I threw my plastic cup at him. Water from it spilled on some hot dogs, but he caught the cup and threw it back at me, laughing. Your pages have crinkled spots, and the water smudges some of the ink. My mom yelled at us to stop it, but even she smiled.

My dad is at work, so we have at least 8 hours of peaceful bliss. That's usually when I ask Chiron to come over. One, my dad's not there to embarrass me in front of him. Two, it reassures me that he's safe from his dad. Oh shit, we both have daddy issues, haha. Besides, whenever Chiron comes over, my mom's been teaching him various Filipino cuisines. I'm not gonna lie — he's a fast learner. Sometimes, I think my mom wishes she had him as a son instead of me as a daughter. The proud look I always see on her face whenever he does something she approves of is something I rarely get to see.

I wish Tristian were here with us. This would make the day even more perfect.

Speaking of him - I maaaay have gotten my first kiss! Well... okay. It may have just been all wet and tongue. I wasn't actually into it.! But he's super cute. I told Chiron about it, and he started laughing.

"When I adopt a slobbery dog, I will name him Tristian!" Chiron told me. Such an asshole, haha!

Dear Atlas,

Tristan printed a diet and workout sheet. He told me if I was serious about auditioning for the dance team, I needed to be in better shape. I asked him if I wasn't in shape, and he told me I would be the hottest girl on the team if I lost at least 10 pounds. However, I was still adorable regardless.

I can lose 10 pounds, right? That doesn't seem complicated. I haven't shown Chiron the plan or told him what Tristian said. Chiron has been learning to make sweet treats and giving them to me. I always feel bad because I can't eat them all. After all, they're not part of my diet.

Oh! He's going to try out for the basketball team when we go back - I think he's going to get it. Plus, it'll give him something to do after school and less time at his own home.

The next day, I was flipping through my diary entries again while Adeline and I lounged on the living room couch. We had finished deep cleaning the house and decided to treat ourselves with chocolate and peanut butter ice cream. After finishing my cone, I closed my diary and turned on the television. I settled for a dating game show I knew was Adeline's favorite.

"Maybe I should sign up for these shows, choose the money, and secretly date the guy after," Adeline commented when one of the male contestants showed up on the screen and introduced himself.
