Chapter 22
I shut my car door, texting Chiron that I was at the grocery store to grab some ingredients for dinner. I put my phone away and grinned, staring at our workplace in front of me. Chiron's working right now, and he thinks I'm off to do errands.
I quickly patted my hair and started walking over.
The back of my neck prickled with awareness, causing me to pause abruptly. I looked both ways before I crossed the roundabout driveway, but the feeling of something continued to settle under my skin as I headed toward the entrance. I glanced over my shoulder and frowned, noting a couple walking over and another party leaving their car—nothing out of the ordinary.
That's weird. I feel like I'm being watched, but no one is looking directly at me. I turned my head upward to the building and noticed the security camera aiming downward at the entrance.
I waved at it and scoffed. Of course, that's probably it.
Shaking the feeling off of me, I entered the library and grinned at the person at the desk. Mrs. Grayson stared at me with a knowing smirk.
She raised a brow, "You know, I would have thought kids your age wouldn't want to step foot in their workplace when it's their day off."
I blushed deeply as I stopped in front of her at the counter. "I wanted to surprise Chiron. He's working in the cafe and staying late because a couple of people called in."
"Aw, so you're here to help him out?" She asked as she resumed typing on the computer. A hint that she needed to go back to work and that I was distracting her.
"Something like that," I said, clearing my throat. I backed away and waved, "I'll see you tomorrow when I'm scheduled!"
Mrs. Grayson waved her hand, dismissing me, "See you, dear."
I power-walked to the cafe and frowned when I noticed it had just two employees working there, but Chiron was nowhere in sight. I walked over to them and waved. These two already knew me, so it wasn't weird to them that I would sometimes stop by.
"Hey, Rosie!" One of the staff greeted me.
"Hey Steve," My gaze skimmed around us, "Where's your boss?"
Steve nodded to the back door with the sign 'Employees Only. ' He's currently in a virtual meeting with potential business partners. He should be done soon, but I'm sure he wouldn't mind seeing you.'
I thanked him before leaving him alone to deal with the line forming. As I walked to the door, I could hear Chiron's voice echoing through his office, and excitement rushed through me. I closed the door gently and quietly walked into his office. Chiron's back was turned to me, so he didn't notice me yet. I closed his office door gently and locked it, knowing that what I had planned was something we didn't want anyone to see or hear.
I sauntered toward him, peering over his shoulder. I was relieved to see that even though his camera was on, he had a background filter that made it look like he was at a beach. In other words, Chiron and his potential business partners couldn't see me standing behind him.
I quietly dropped to my knees and crawled to his side, staying out of the camera's view. My hand rested on his thigh, causing him to jump slightly. He whirled around to face me, his eyes widening with surprise and confusion.
"Oh yeah, it's all good!" Chiron said, talking to one of them. "I... uh... One of my colleagues is asking me something. Hold on." He pulled out his headphones and muted his mic, turning to me as he moved the camera away. His grin was so wide that he leaned down to kiss me. "What are you doing here?"
