Chapter 14

"Do you think we're moving too fast?" I asked Adeline.

Much to my sadness, Chiron had left an hour ago to go home so he could change and go to work. I walked him over to his vehicle and kissed him through his car window, telling him to have fun at the cafe and to bring me some treats. He had kept pouting adorably every time I pulled away, so I happily obliged and kept kissing him again until Adeline shouted at us from the house window to get a room. The cheesy grin on his face as he drove off made my heart burst.

Adeline glanced at me from the couch. A look of confusion spread across her face. "Define what you mean by 'too fast.'"

I sighed, remembering our time together last night. After I was getting over my anger over what happened when we were teenagers, Chiron did a great job distracting me with his lips. We didn't do anything past kissing, but I feel like there are many more things Chiron and I needed to discuss. Things that happened between us led to our fallout in the first place, what we've gone through, and how we've changed.

"I think you're just overthinking stuff," Adeline said after I told her what I felt. "Just let everything fall where they may. You're meant to grow together and figure things out as you go. Relax and have fun."

I sighed, knowing she was right. Chiron has deep feelings for me, so I won't ruin it by overthinking.

"Have you spoken to Ethan lately?" I asked her curiously.

An unreadable look passed her face. "No. Why?"

I shrugged, a little sad for him knowing what he felt for her. "Oh, never mind. I was just wondering."

She just stared at something on the floor, not saying anything.

A few days later, Chiron and I were dropped off at the airport in the morning by Adeline, and despite take-off being another hour and a half, both Chiron and I made sure to find our gate first before we wandered around the airport. Since most shops were still closed, we found ourselves seated in a bakery near our gate, so it was easy to keep an ear out for announcements. I took our identifications out with our tickets, double and then triple-checking our boarding time and seat numbers.

"Hot chocolate with a couple pumps of hazelnut syrup and a nice big cinnamon roll."

I looked up and felt my heart swell with appreciation as I watched Chiron place them in front of us before pulling his chair right next to mine. I grimaced, and realization dawned on me when I saw we'd become those people now — The type who sit next to each other and not across. Are we even those couples? Are we even together-together, or just friends who like kissing?

"They didn't have chocolate croissants, ma belle Rose," Chiron laughed, mistaking my grimace for something else.

I shook my head to clear my thoughts, grinning at him. I leaned to the side and kissed his cheek before cutting the cinnamon roll in half for us to share. "It's okay. Thank you for getting this."

"This is for purely selfish reasons. I've seen you hungry," Chiron said, giving me the side-eye before smirking. "I would rather not experience that again."

I scoffed, playfully poking him in the ribs. He hissed in surprise, batting my hand away. After a few minutes of comfortable silence, while we sipped and munched on our little breakfast, Chiron turned to me and asked, "How are you feeling?"

I swallowed my last bite of the roll and sighed before shrugging, "I'm excited." And I am. I get to go home. We get to go home for a bit.

Chiron looked at me for a minute before nodding. He reached for my hand and laced our fingers together, "I'm here with you, Rose. Just like old times, I will be here. I'm not going anywhere, okay?"
