Gabriela spent the night in the house on the cliff, suddenly everyone was woken up by the sounds of distant cannons. They all ran to the cliff. Fermín took the chance to tell Gabriela that her father was very upset about her decision to live alone. She closed her eyes and chuckled then she said indifferently, "The man thought I was going to be married by now and the house would be vacant for his mistress who must be coming next week, he never thought I would move here."

"Get ready because he will be coming tomorrow and if I were you I would expect a visit from the duke, too!" Fermín commented.

"Don't worry we will deal with that tomorrow. Please bring me the spyglass so we can find out what's going on." Gabriela said. Fermín ran to the house. When he brought the spyglass, they heard an explosion and saw fire on the water.

Gabriela looked through the spyglass and saw the silhouette of the Interceptor, without wasting any time she ordered the men, "Quick all of you help get the shallop in the water. Fermín take Joaquín and some men try to look for survivors, I hope it is not the Black Pearl. Use the black sails so you are not seen by the English!" She breathed heavily with concern, "Be careful and stay safe!"

"Don't worry niña!" We'll come back soon!" Joaquín said.

"Fernando get the remaining men on the beach to help carry up the wounded." She ordered and Fernando nodded and started instructing the men and they ran down the stairs to the beach. They helped get the shallop into the water and then waited. Gabriela turned to Isabela, "Isabela divide the women into two groups one will be with Catalina and Claire in the kitchen preparing some broth, soup, or stew to warm the sailors, and the other will be with you preparing some dry clothes, bedding, and boiling water so they can wash up themselves. Prepare that in the secret room under the barn just in case the English come and search the place. Two of the single men will remain with them to help them and keep them quiet. Remember to cover the entrance with hay or anything so nobody notices the entrance when you leave."

Isabela asked, "Don't you prefer one of us to remain with these people?"

Gabriela explained, "That's impossible. Davenport knows all of you, it will be suspicious if some of you are missing! It's too risky." When Isabela was about to start her task Gabriela added "Please give Charlie and Albert some bottles of rum to take to the beach so they drink something strong to help them with the pain, and infections and to warm them up!" Isabela nodded and they all got to work. Gabriela remained on the cliff watching through the spyglass. Since the fire was behind the shallop Gabriela could see its black silhouette but the Interceptor which was between the shallop and the ship on fire could not see it. As soon as they rescued any sailor they covered them with a black piece of cloth. They were able to rescue only six sailors. They clearly were pirates. Fermín decided to wait without getting any closer for a while just in case they could see another man they could save. They rescued two more, one seemed to be the captain of the ship. They took them to the cove. The rest of Gabriela's employees helped them off the shallop, up the cliff, and into the secret room. They got new clothes, hot water, and soap to wash, some rum, and hot chicken broth. Isabella tended their wounds if there were any. Thankfully the only injuries were minor cuts. Then Fernando explained to them they should remain there in silence because the English might go search the property and assured them once they recovered they would go free from that place. They also took their weapons and promised to return them to them when they left. Two of the former slaves stayed with them to help them if they needed anything. Their dirty clothes remained there the next day the two men in charge of taking care of them would wash them and hang them there so the English couldn't find any trace of evidence of their presence on the property.

The rest of the men helped get the shallop back in the cave, washed any traces of the wounded pirates, and then swept the beach to erase the marks from the shallop being taken out of the water and back into the cave then they secured the iron bars with a padlock. Felipe was in charge of staying up and watching for any survivor getting to the beach. Gabriela gave him the spyglass and went to the house. Felipe and two men remained watching out and the rest went back to sleep after being instructed not to say a word about what was going on to anyone outside the house.
