I got up with tangles in my hair. So I went for a hairbrush and combed my hair with it. I washed up and put on my favorite dress. I went downstairs for breakfast. My mother was already sitting at the table and my aunt was cooking breakfast. I sat down and waited for breakfast. Then Mika came downstairs, gave me the newspaper and said:
-Look at this, Hana.
-Why?- I replied
-It's very important, she muttered
And then I moved the newspaper closer to me and saw something that no one would have expected... and it looked like this:
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Yomiuri Shimbun. August 9, 1945
Another atomic bomb dropped by the US on Nagasaki
The Americans dropped the second atomic bomb on Nagasaki today at 11:02. 72,000 citizens died. Will a third atomic bomb be dropped on Tokyo? Time will tell.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^
I froze in place. I don't believe. They did it again... are they normal?! I was afraid they would drop this bomb on Tokyo.
My aunt gave me some cereal. I ate them and went with Mika to my room. We sat on the bed and talked about it all the time. I showed her my wounds and burns. They slowly disappeared, but they were still there. Then someone knocked on the door. It was some strange girl. We looked at each other very strangely until my mother came to us and said:
-I wanted to tell you this for a long time, but...
- But what, mom?! - we both said, and then we looked at each other strangely again.
- ...You are sisters. Me and your dad got divorced. You were little then. Hana, your sister still remembers me because she had our wedding photo, but she didn't know she had a sister. You weren't in this photo because you weren't born yet. And when we got back together, he died and your sister went to live with her grandparents
I'm sorry I didn't told you about that. Then we hugged our mother and replied:
- Don't worry, mom. Nothing happened.
Then I hugged my sister. Her name was Tomoko. I showed her every nook and cranny of the house. Then we entered Mika's room. Mika was sitting on the bed and reading a book. She put the book down and looked at Tomoko. She asked:
-Hana, who is this?
-This is my sister Tomoko.- I replied in a gentle voice.
And she replied in a cold tone:
-y-do you have a sister? And you didn't tell me about it?!
-Mika, it's not like that. I didn't know about her either. Until she knocked on the door and mom told us that we were sisters and so on... -I said
And then we went to a nearby park. I sat on a bench and thought about all this. Then the tears flowed. Then a girl approached me. She was slightly taller than me, had black hair, brown eyes, and smiled at me. She asked:
-What happened, you look so sad?
I replied:
-B- because I am or was from Hiroshima. Everything I knew and loved was destroyed. And people with whom I had a great bond died or disappeared.
Then this friend hugged me and said:
-It is very sad. I understand your situation. I'm from Nagasaki and I had to experience the same thing.
"R-really?" I asked
-Seriously.
-And what's your name?
- My name is Mai, and you?
-I'm Hana
-It was nice to meet you
-Mutually
And then Mika muttered:
-Let's go.
And then we all went home. Mom prepared dinner for us. We sat down and started eating. Once we were done, we went to our rooms...
