We hiked through the tunnels for a bit before we came to a room with a high cliff face. It was basically vertical, with some outcroppings that could be used as handholds. I reached out a hand to touch the rock face- it was wet.
"There's water up there," I told the group, pointing up the cliff.
"How do we get up there though?" Mason asked,
"We climb," I said, unpacking my climbing equipment from my pack. The others looked at me dumbly, "Please say you took some from the cornucopia before throwing it off the side of the mountain." None of them quite met my eye. "Fine," I said, "We'll go up one at a time then throw it down."
"That's just putting the first and last person at risk," Hildegarde said,
"Well I'm not the one who got rid of all the climbing equipment without thinking that it might be useful." As if in answer to her protest, a parachute drifted towards Hildegarde. When she opened it, there was another set of climbing equipment. I smiled at her sweetly. Part of me was taunting her, but the other part knew that she didn't have that many sponsors and a gift that big would've used up a big portion of her money. And that just brought me one step closer to winning. It was decided that Morgan and I would go up first as Hildegarde and Mason would probably climb quicker so wouldn't be alone as long. I was absolutely fine with that as it meant I would be protected as I climbed. That and I knew Mason would watch.
With the help of all the climbing equipment, Morgan and I made it up the cliff fairly quickly, although my muscles hurt by the time I made it up so I let Morgan help me over the ridge. We quickly detangled ourselves from the straps and threw them back down to the others, who scaled the wall so quickly that you might wonder if they had been bred especially for that. Although, that mightn't've been far from the truth from the look of them. They were bred to kill at the very least. In the time it took for them to scale the wall, I hadn't even had time to properly take in my surroundings but now, I was able to look around and I knew I had not been wrong about there being water: before us there was a massive lake with waterfalls flooding in from high above us. I looked to Morgan, whose face had lit up at the sight of water. I think I understood now why he loved his home so much. The water was beautiful, lit up like a fountain of jewels by the small pillar of natural light filtering in from the ceiling. It must've been finally daytime since the sky was so bright that I could barely look at it without being blinded.
"We should get some sleep," Morgan suggested, "It's been at least twenty four hours and the adrenaline is going to run out soon."
"It's going to be difficult with all that sunlight," Mason contradicted, "and it's quite cold in here."
"What about one of those caverns," I said, pointing to the small alcoves in the base of the cave wall,
"Seems okay," said Morgan, "We'll sleep in shifts, "Girls then boys."
"Okay," I replied, only too happy to catch up on sleep. Especially if Hildegarde was going to be asleep at the same time. I didn't think the boys would kill me in my sleep, not yet anyway. We settled into a smallish alcove and I took a spot in the wall furthest from the entrance, using my pack as a pillow and my jacket as a blanket. I shivered slightly and Morgan came over to sit with me. he laid his much bigger jacket over me so that I was almost completely covered by it with my knees tucked into my chest,
You'll get cold," I said, without conviction. The warmth was comforting. It felt like home. Damn it. I was getting attatched. I needed to stop this. It wasn't like Morgan was going to survive the games. And if all went to plan, I would be the one to kill him. And Mason too. For my new plan, it had to be my hand, or my blade, that ended them.
Morgan smiled at me as I drifted off to sleep. Far too quickly. The sleep was deep and I only stirred when Hildegarde's unpleasant booming voice projected right into my ear,
"It's our turn to guard."
"Could've told me more quietly," I told her, wiping the crust of sleep from my eyes. I checked all my knives were still in place then began to sip at my water and eat some of my rations. I would need to refill my water soon but I could wait until the others had slept. I'd ask one of them to come with me of course. They could use the ego boost of protecting the defenceless damsel. It would also help them lower their guard so they could do the inevitable.
We were planning to let them sleep for at least six hours, but it seemed the arena had other plans. Out of nowhere, there was a BOOM, and the others jolted awake. Night had just about fallen and the light level was fairly low so we all fished out our nightvision goggles.
"Where did that come from?" Morgan asked. There was another BOOM.
"It sounds like an alliance just broke up," Mason said without emotion. Very soon those cannons would be for our alliance. There were only seven people left after all. And four of them were in this room.
"I'm going to go check it out," Hildegarde said, "with a fight like that, there's bound to be injuries. We can follow the blood trail and finish off whoever is left."
"Aren't you going to take someone with you?" I asked as Hildegarde began strapping herself into a climbing harness.
"Well we can't all go and I can't take my district partner so no." With that, Hildegarde went to fill up her water and prepare for her next fight leaving the rest of us alone.
"She's going to betray us," I whispered to the boys, "we all know there isn't much time left and she knows it too. Someone has to go with her and finish her."
"I can't do it," Mason said, "everyone knows you'll be shunned if you kill your district partner. I can't go home to that." I turned to Morgan,
"Please," I begged, "You're the only one who can do it. You're the only one who can save us."
"I don't know if I can," he whispered, taking my face in his hands, "she could kill me."
"She won't," I told him, "she's going to be hunting first. Let her make the kill then get her. You can do it. Please." He looked into my eyes,
"For you, I can do it Rose." He ran out of the alcove, calling for Hildegarde to wait. I was shocked that he had actually done it. I had thought he would say no for sure. But that's what you get for thinking with your dick and not your head. And it seemed Mason was doing the same.
