The platform raised me into the arena much quicker than during my first games. Immediately, I was greeted with the sight of water. Typical, just my luck.
There wasn't even a way off the pedestal without submerging myself in it. I hoped it wasn't poisonous. With a glance to the clock, I saw I still had fifty seconds left. I didn't waste any time before dropping so that my belly was on the pedestal and I could reach out and touch the water with my hand. With a drop still hanging onto my fingernail, I brought it to my mouth. I could almost hear Cashmere screaming at me not to be stupid. Saltwater. It was okay.
I caught Johanna's eye to my left and nodded. She looked away, but I could tell she wished she could say something. I hadn't seen her yesterday evening. I only realised now that I hadn't had the chance to say goodbye.
By now, the countdown was nearly up. With ten seconds remaining, I scanned the cornucopia for my throwing knives: they were right in the centre. It seemed like I was going to need to make the Capitol regret not cutting off my nails. Again.
As we reached the final three seconds, I put myself in the position for a dive and waited for the gong.
BOOM.
Before the sound had disappeared completely, I dove from my pedestal into the water. Before my games, I might've stayed underwater longer, but as soon as I opened my eyes, I saw them. The bodies were suspended in the water infront of me again. The air escaped my mouth, blocking my view with a pillar of bubbles. And then they were gone.
I forced myself to kick to the surface. Aready people had started to reach the cornucopia. I swore loudly as the woman from nine grabbed the knives and began to run down a strip of land.
It was a good thing I was close. I swam over, climbing up onto the rocky bridge and turned to face her.
Briefly, a look of fear overtook her expression, but then it set into grim determination. She was a victor after all, why would she run from me? I was no better than she was, especially since she was armed. Or so she thought.
In the second it had taken her to pull out a knife, I was on her. The knife clattered uselessly to the ground and I brought my nails up to her throat. Soon blood had begun to rush out of the wound. I kicked her into the water for good measure.
With her out of the way, I siezed the pack of throwing knives.
"Ah!" A sudden flash of pain errupted from my leg as the throwing knife the woman had dropped embedded itself in my leg. I looked up, scanning for my assailant. The district partner of the woman I had just killed stared back at me. Suddenly, I was engulfed in fury.
He must've realised that my wrath would soon be upon him because he turned and ran. I yanked the knife from my leg, wincing. I contemplated my target for a second then threw the knife. It hit right in his lower back. Exactly where it needed to in order to paralyse him. I was sure someone watching would know that. Would know just how good I was with my knives. I had been picked to compete for a reason. It wasn't my fault I couldn't show off in my initial games just because the arena wasn't ideal. Maybe then they'd sponsor me something for my leg. I didn't want to spend my last days in pain now, did I?
I walked along the narrow spoke of land to where the man had dropped and crouched down beside him. I pulled the knife from his back, causing him to cry out in pain,
"You know, this would've been a whole lot better for you if you had just run," I told him as I brought the knife to his throat, "Maybe you would've lived. At least for a few more days." He didn't resist as I slit his throat, didn't even look at me. I kicked his body into the water afterwards- wouldn't want to trip over it on the way back. The fighting was nearly over by the time I reached the cornucopia. It was only the other three members of the pack left standing in a circle near the mouth.
"Took you long enough," Enobaria snarled,
"I was dealing with the pair from nine," I told her emotionlessly, "They tried to take my knives." I glanced over to cornucopia, looking back to the others in surprise, "Did you already package up the food?" Gloss shook his head,
"There was nothing but weapons."
"Looks like they're hoping for a quick game then," I said,
"Or for sponsors to help the favourites," Brutus suggested,
"Then we don't have a problem," I said.
"Everdeen and Odair have allied," Gloss said, "Mellark will probably be with them too. They'll probably take in the lion's share." I nodded grimly, but I had to pull the target off that group,
"There are still people in the Capitol who will go for those who will win. They know we are a strong alliance. The career pack always is."
"I think you're forgetting that everyone is a victor this year," Brutus said, "We aren't the only ones trained to kill now."
As if to confirm this, the canons began to boom: eight in total. It was on the lower end of bloodbath death counts. I guess the playing field was leveller this year. And maybe some of the tributes were smart enough to run.
