Leo studied her intently. She was serious. He frowned. "Very well. Do what you want. Stay in the car if you want. That won't guarantee i will give you a listening ear."
After saying that, Leo signaled his driver to head straight to his house.
She relaxed then and Leo realized she had been holding her breath. Which Leo did not understand.
Another thing he didn't understand was why was she here? Why was she hellbent on explaining herself? What reason did she think she would give that will change his mind? He wanted to believe there was a good reason for this, but he couldn't think of anything.
"I'm sorry." Leo hadn't realized he had been staring at her until she said that.
He turned his face towards the window. Not wanting her to see how that word affected him. He swallowed. "Why did you tell Finn you were pregnant with my child and not me?"
"Because you will insist on marrying me once you find out," she cried.
"And you didn't want that." Leo turned his head just enough so he could look into her eyes. His voice, rough. And unable to hide the hurt he was feeling.
She must have seen that because her face contorted and her lips trembled. "Yes. I mean no. There is more to it I promise. I will explain everything if we could just talk somewhere privately." As she said this, she eyed Wesley askance. Who made a good show of not listening to their conversation, but who Leo could tell was listening to every single bit.
While she waited for him to reply, Leo mulled over her answer in his head. Usually whenever someone says something and changes it up almost immediately. The first answer was always the one closest to the truth. And if he were to apply the analogy. Does it mean Paige hated the idea of marrying him?
This was not the first time he had had this suspicion.
Leo eyed her. She was eagerly waiting for a reply. Leo closed his eyes briefly and whipped his face with his hand, settling it over his mouth.
Just then, the car stopped, and Leo looked out the tinted window and saw they were outside his home.
There was no need to prolong this period if this was what she was going to tell him—that she hated the idea of marrying him. That's why she didn't tell him about the pregnancy. He didn't think he wanted to hear how little he meant to her. His pride and his heart can't handle it anymore.
Stepping out of the car, Leo was well aware of Paige following close behind him. He held the door blocking her path and waited till the steady rise of her eyes landed on his steely brown ones.
"Go home, Paige," he said, his voice resigned. Her eyes widened innocently. "I don't want to see you."
After saying that, he left her there and went into his house.
Paige squatted down and buried her head in her hand.
"Don't take what he said to heart. I mean, I don't think he means it." Wesley said, coming to stand near her. "Don't mind the harshness in his voice. I think he is deeply hurt, that's why."
Ignoring him, Paige proceeded to make herself comfortable in her squatting position, and her knee protested at that, but she paid it no heed, hugging her arms. She felt like she was floating in the air, and seeing everything from outside her body. She couldn't get past the look on Leonardo's face when he had discovered her deceit. Ever since Finn revealed everything to him, Leo hadn't looked at her the same way again.
She thought getting married to him when he did not love her was the worst, but she was wrong. Having him keep her at arm's length like this was the worst. She couldn't bear it. Because now she suddenly realized she didn't care if he wanted to marry her, but did not love her. As long as she was near him.
Oh, why didn't she realize it sooner?
"I—I take it you in love with him." Wesley's words penetrated her thoughts, and Paige looked up at him, surprised at how he figured that out. Her baby blue eyes, bright with tears, and sniffled, lowering her head.
"Um, I will take that as a yes?" He scratched the back of his ear. Looking nervous. "Do you know why he is like this?"
Paige wanted to scream for him to leave her alone, but he said something she wasn't expecting.
"Leonardo liked you a lot, and as such, had expected a lot from you. He held you in very high esteem. Only to discover you have been lying to him. Not only that, I think he must have been hurt to find out you were willing to tell Finn you were pregnant but not him. In my own opinion that shows a lack of trust."
At once, Paige's lips trembled, and she covered her face with her hands. "Oh my God, i hadn't seen it like this." She had only been thinking about herself. Now everything has escalated. How she wished she can turn back the hands of time. Then he will be the first person she would tell.
"Ahem," Wesley cleared his throat, looking uncomfortable at the play of emotions that were running through Paige's face. "Look, I didn't tell you this to freak you out. I only wanted you to understand Leo better." A frown marred his face. "But am beginning to guess now he never told you about his feelings."
"Leonardo has feelings for me?" Paige said in disbelief.
A sigh escaped Wesley's lips. "Just as I thought, the man sure knows how to take his sweet time."
If he has feelings for her, then her betrayal was worse than she thought.
Wesley was gazing at her with apparent pity in his eyes. "I wish I can help you, but I'm afraid there is nothing I can do."
Rising from the ground, Paige wiped her eyes. "You've helped me a lot already. That means a lot to me." He gave her a sad smile. Which she returned.
"Uhh, I think I will go find Leo now."
"Ah, about that check for him in his room first, am afraid the poor man might be drinking himself to stupor."
A tight-lipped smile was all Paige gave before she left to go and find Leo.
