Third pov

"Mom? Dad?" Maddy exclaimed.

The two adults stood out the door staring at their daughter.

"I thought you would be more excited to see us, Madelyn," Kimberly spoke bitterly as she pushed past her daughter. Her husband followed closely behind her.

She knew her daughter wasn't pleased to see her by the expression on her face.

" I am. I just wasn't expecting you guys to show up. That's all," she explained to her agitated mother.

She ushered both of her parents into the office.

"So where's your brother?" Her dad asked impatiently.

"We know he's not at the house. We already checked." Kimberly said snide.

The young girl sighed as she dreadfully called for her brother.

" What Mads can it wait. The cookies are almost done," he complained down the hall as he approached.

He jogged into the office and then halted as he noticed the two adults.

What are they doing here? He thought. He simply just wanted a drama free holiday with the people who loved him.

"Awww, there's our boy," the parents ran over to their son and engulfed him with a hug.

Madelyn would be lying if she said she didn't feel a twinge of jealousy. She always knew her brother was the favorite.

She stood back as her brother and parents embraced.

"How are you, joshua?" Kimberly asks the youngest evans as they pull away from the embrace.

He grimaced at the name. No one ever called him that except his mother.

She takes her hands and flatten out his hair much to the boys despise.

"I'm fine, mom," he faked. He quickly pulled away from the hug, stepping backward.

"What are you guys doing here?" Josh asked finally.

Kimberly and Dan looked at their children before answering.

"Your mother and I thought it was important to see you guys on this special day. Right, Kim." Dan said unconvincingly, putting an arm around his wife.

She nodded at her husband.

A couple minutes passed by, and the parents ended up finding Katherine and George.

The kids quickly snuck away from their parents' gaze back to the kitchen.

Madelyn pov

After my parents' unexpected appearance, I hung out with my brother and the garcias at the barn.

The Walters have this really nice lounge area for us kids on the second floor of the barn.

I laid down on the couch as the boys threw around a football.

"I mean what the fuck were they thinking?" I stared up at the ceiling as I expressed my anger.

The boys nodded. They had stopped answering 10 minutes ago when I started my rant.

I hugged a pillow across my chest. "They didn't even acknowledge me! But as soon as josh walks in, they gush over him."

"No offense, joshy." I saw my brother nod out of my peripheral vision, looking unbothered.

"They can't just show up without a good reason. Wanting to just be there for us seems a little suspicious. Right, guys?" I ask for some guidance.

"Yeah,"
