The underground market was a dangerous place, but it was also a lifeline for people like me. Under the cover of night, I made my way through the winding alleys, keeping to the shadows. The market was a chaotic sprawl of makeshift stalls and desperate traders, all trying to eke out a living in the ruins of our once-great city.
Felix was waiting for me at our usual spot, a dimly lit corner near a collapsed building. He was a young mechanic with a knack for finding and fixing pre-war technology. His quick wit and resourcefulness had made him a valuable ally.
"Ella, over here," he called out, waving me over. His face lit up with a grin as I approached. "I've got something special for you today."
"What is it?" I asked, curiosity piqued.
He pulled a small, worn device from his coat. "A holographic transmitter. It's old, but it still works. It could help you escape, even if just in your mind."
I took the device, feeling a spark of hope. "How much?"
"For you, it's free. Just promise you'll be careful."
I smiled, a rare genuine smile. "Thank you, Felix. I promise."
We sat down together, and Felix showed me how to use the transmitter. "It's simple," he explained. "Just press this button, and it will project a holographic image around you. You can adjust the settings to create different appearances."
As he spoke, I couldn't help but feel a pang of gratitude. Felix had been a constant in my life, a beacon of kindness in a world that seemed devoid of it. "Why are you so good to me, Felix?" I asked quietly.
He shrugged, his expression turning serious. "Because you deserve it, Ella. You're one of the few people who haven't given up and who still believe in something better. That kind of hope is rare, and it's worth protecting."
I felt a lump in my throat as I looked at him. "Thank you," I whispered.
"Anytime," he replied with a smile. "Now, go home and try it out. Let me know how it goes."
I nodded, clutching the transmitter tightly as I made my way back through the dark streets. The journey home felt a little less daunting with the promise of escape, however brief, in my pocket.
Back at the house, I waited until Mara and my stepsisters were asleep before I pulled out the transmitter. With trembling hands, I activated it, watching in awe as a holographic image enveloped me. For the first time in a long time, I felt a glimmer of hope. Maybe there was a way out of this nightmare after all.
