I ran through the Citadel’s labyrinthine corridors, my transmitter flickering dangerously. The guards were close behind, their shouts echoing off the cold walls. Felix's voice crackled in my earpiece.
"Head for the west exit. I've hacked the security systems."
"Thank you, Felix," I whispered, tears of gratitude and fear mixing.
With his guidance, I evaded the guards, barely making it out. As I fled into the night, I felt the transmitter fail, my true self revealed. I looked back at the Citadel, knowing I had left a part of myself behind.
The streets were deserted, the city shrouded in darkness. I ran until I could no longer feel my legs, finally collapsing in an alley. Felix found me there, his face etched with worry.
"Ella, are you okay?"
"I am now," I replied, exhaustion washing over me.
He helped me up, his touch a comforting presence. "Let's get you home."
As we made our way back, I couldn't help but think about Prince August. I wondered if he would remember the girl he danced with, or if I was just another fleeting moment in a night of illusion.
